For better or worse, this thread has me thinking. (That's usually not good.) I think for these to look OK, they've gotta be (a) lowered, (b) on smallish, vintagey wheels, (c) in some kind of classy paint, maybe two tone with contrasting color on the roof/hood/trunk, or in classic Bug style, with a contrasting color just on the doors between the fender bubbles.
dig these wheels:
Crappy little pic, but I'm really into this paint:
Speaking of two tone paint (though this is a 'chop of a '12, it may work on an ONB):
Or, the other direction...

My buddy Tim (TWHansen on the board here) is a master of deals. He bought his red one for $1500; had to do the timing belt right away, but alas. He found me a slick blue one for $2250 and a yellow one I'd rather not have for $1800...they are around, seriously, nobody wants a Beetle around here even if its a TDI.
The one fly in the ointment for me on the new bettle (my mother has one next door) is they are a royal pain in the tuchus? Tukus? Hootus! to work on nothing is easy to access under the hood except the plastic engine cover. I hate working on hers even when I have access to a lift and all the snap on tools a little boy could want at the local vocational school shop.
Funny thread... I had told my son a while back that I couldn't drive one of these until they were in the sub 2k range...
It just looks the the type of car I would be bored looking at after 6 months...
(But I am diggin' the rally cross beetle for some reason...)
Back to our regularly scheduled thread...
All this from folks that think Yugo's are cool and work to make them handle better?
Is the suspension that much different than other VW's that they can't be made to handle? I think it would be very cool to take an unloved, uncool car and spank the naysayers on a course. I drove a turbo one a few years back and thought it had more than enough gitty-up. Granted, turbo lag but the only cars with less lag are at least twice the $$$.
And if all else fails, then as other have said.....RALLYCROSS IT!
I saw a new new beetle in the showroom a couple weeks ago. It was red with the aluminum rims that look like black steelies. I liked. They also had a '57 bettle and a 70 super beetle in the show room. (Ganley in Bedford, Ohio).
Hmmm, I do believe I'm a man...Yep, just checked. I actually kind of like the beetles. Not sure why. I've had lots of VW's over the years. None have been anywhere near as terrible as internet lore. The red one with the BFG's looks pretty sweet. Maybe my next winter car????

it looks tolerable, except for the fact that to drive it you'd have to raise the airbags up, and then it would look like a stupid beetle again....
the new ones don't look as retarded as the original "new" beetle, but it still looks pretty terrible. The only one in this thread that looks reasonably good is the one on page 1 with the orange wheels. And I still wouldn't drive it.....

I LOVE this look
The suspension is the same as mk4 jetta, etc. There is actually quite a bit of room under the hood to work on stuff if you remove the plastic tray below the windshield (where the wipers are). They are really not much worse to work on than an mk2 golf or jetta. They are still stupid looking, but I think they would make a great sleeper. Get a tdi one with dents and faded paint, and add some daisy wheels, fake flowers in the vase on the dash, and suspension+turbo/injector/computer upgrades. A 200hp tdi beetle would be pretty amusing.
In reply to SlickDizzy:
No, I'd thought I'd heard they were $4k or so. Still not cheap, but you would almost have a free engine after parting the rest. Oh well, I guess I'll go with "LSX" as an answer?
You know, if you took the red one with the off-road tires and made it look a little more Baja... Obviously, the stinger treatment really wouldn't work, but a front bar with some Hellas on it, and/or the roof would be cool. Wonder if you work out some trimmed down fenders too???
Color me intrigued... moar lift and less obnoxious paint plus a stinger style exhaust and I would rock it....

Kinda like this?
The front end got damaged in an accident. I think it looks better this way. Now for the rear fenders...
Im NOT saying this is a matter of "I'm too manly to drive one" especially since there's so much Miata love here (me included) but I just hope this additude doesn't exist. It'd be a shame to ignore a car with so many potential routes of modification.
I'm thinking of buying a cheap one, see them for $1,000 on Boston's Craigslist and just seeing where it ends up!
