Oh, I agree 100%. Wrong word - I was thinking more in terms of long term reliability and general finnekyness as opposed to lacking in power. They're much cleaner now and make more power and seem to have fewer cold-start challenges. But there are a billion sensors and systems that make all that possible and they can fail in so many awesome ways!
In reply to RossD :
Diesels being rated a bit lower for payload is pretty common in trucks, as the engines are heavier. Look at an F-250 or bigger. The biggest gas engine always has a little more payload capacity than the diesel (towing may or may not be different depending on how they determined the rating relative to the other limiting weights).

Yeah payload is chassis ratings so heavier motor/options = less payload. Same thing with trim levels, sometimes an axle package or gear ratios increase the towing but not usually payload

Not so much more than a gasoline engine has. Okay, sure, there's the reactant system to deal with and soot traps and such, but at least they haven't had to go to computer controlled thermostats for different cooling zones in the engine for ultra-fast warmup.
Yet, anyway.

If the truck is your daily driver, but you tow a boat, race car or small camper on the weekends I can see the appeal. It would get better fuel economy and comfort than the heavy duty trucks for daily tasks, and still provides enough capability to handle most of the work that an average weekend warrior would throw at it.
I have been waiting for them to do this, and I will probably be first in line to trade in my 2014. I love that truck, but the small diesel economy is something I'd really like.
If these drive as well as the new F-150's they'll be damn comfy daily drivers. I already can't believe how much nicer the last of the GMT900's are than my 2007. Trucks make good cars these days.

Like all diesel vs gas debates of the last decade, it's going to require math. Some people will be able to make the numbers work, while others won't. Many more won't bother to do the math at all, and will get whatever they want.
The half tons do drive pretty nicely. But for my own purposes, I'm always still left thinking that a smaller DD is better so I could have a bigger truck that I don't have to drive all the time and never run into the "not enough truck" problem.

I'm the opposite, I'm not a fan of a truck as a DD. Most of the time I don't need the bed and I need secure, lockable storage. I don't want to deal with the size of a quad cab short bed truck, especially parking it in the city. It won't fit underneath my lift. It won't fit in my garage, period.
Basically I'd rather have an SUV, just works better for what I need. If I had the storage space than it would make sense to pick up a used, older, cheaper truck to do towing and truck things so I could then have a sports car as my DD...

I wonder if anything was used from the old 2.9L project for Cadillac.
https://www.autoblog.com/2007/03/06/geneva-motor-show-cadillac-unveils-new-2-9l-v6-diesel-for-cts/
My experience working for a large company says probably not.
In reply to tuna55 :
Maybe some basic engineering concepts and principles, but not much more since the Cadillac engine was a v6, and this new GM diesel is an inline 6.

A lot crosses over, I was thinking injector placement, piston shape, runner size, etc... Maybe not. That 2.9 was one I was intrigued by.
In reply to tuna55 :
I guess I'd consider those to be basic engineering concepts, but we're just arguing semantics at that point. It would be interesting to know what happened to the Cadillac diesel. It made it pretty far along in the design phase to never see production (unless it was used in Opel work vans, I don't see any production numbers). That would've been "Old GM", pre-08 collapse, and pre emissions equipment for all diesels, so it had some serious hurdles to overcome. Diesel tech has advanced significantly since then but, there is this more recent update, so maybe they're still working on an evolution of the 2.9.

The crew cabs have soo much back seat room its nice, but I also agree. I like that the Cayenne is actually relatively small vs a burb etc but still tows what 8k?

I'm being totally non-sarcastic when i say you should look into the new Ridgeline. The storage options are neat, and it is mostly a Pilot. They are pricey, though.

Yes, yes it was used! That's the engine that made it into the Ram.

As much as I loathe admitting that I look at Jalopnk occasionally, I was just poking around at their Detroit coverage about the Silverado and they showed a picture of the three seat split bench in front. The six person crew cab lives on for now. Can I get it with the diesel? That is to be determined.

The Chevy’s styling does nothing for me. I’m actually more interested in the new mild-hybrid Ram 1500’s than the new Silverado diesel. I’ve seen the ram out testing and it’s really good looking in person.

Jaynen, yes, the Cayenne tows 7700lbs. So quite a bit considering its size, more than most SUV's and small pickups. Yet it easily fits in downtown parking spots, garages, etc.
If I lived in Texas where Seth does and had the truck needs he has, a truck would make way more sense. Since I live in suburbia, an SUV works for me

When I run out of kids I'm going back to the FJ Cruiser and a utility trailer. Crew cab truck is task specific for me. I don't really even like mine but I'll be damned if I can find something that works as well as it does for the task at hand. I'm 170 miles from 200k on mine and I'm getting sick of the 4L60E. If I can't find a better tool for the job I'm at least considering getting a nicer version of it.

We're just the opposite. We love our CCSB. I mean, it tows almost 7k lbs, seats 6 in comfort, knocks down 22mpg at real highway speeds and makes great V8 noises, drives and rides awesome. The one downside is parking a 19.5' long beast with a hugenormous wheelbase (143.5" or 12 FEET). My old swift was the same length as this trucks wheelbase.... bumper to bumper.

There is getting to be considerable discussion in the family whether this is true. Not sure if it's the kids nearing adult size or what, but Mrs. Deuce was pretty happy to fly the last two times the rest of us drove up and back. I did notice that auto show reports are that there will be rear seat heaters available in the new trucks. If they let me heat all six seats I'm pretty sure we're sold.
Hello, first ever post...... Chevy Colorado diesel isn't a bad option to consider. I bought a '16 Colorado Diesel about 7 months or so ago as my daily and I'm pretty happy with it. I'm getting ~23 MPG average in day to day driving and up to 30 on the highway if it keep it below 80 MPH. Tow rating is about ~7500 with the crew cab short bed that I have. I did manage to find a used one, but they aren't cheap. It's not a lot smaller than the first 1/2 ton I had back in the 90s.

When that day comes where are you going to find one that isn't worn out?
In reply to D2W :
In the driveway? It's got 185k on it now, but it's still doing well. It will need a suspension refresh eventually but the parts are available and cheap and I like working on it because of how it's engineered and screwed together. Still one of my favorite cars to drive. With the 6sp it's like driving a tractor for the road. I love it.

Didn't realize you had one. I love mine for all the reasons you do. It's as simple as a modern car can get. Also the most rugged and reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Mine has 173K on it and the only things I've done is replaced tires and changed the oil and filters. I changed the shocks to the upgraded Biltstien 5100. I feel like I'm going to drive it until the wheels fall off.
