Since Radio Shack is no longer, who has stepped up to do the 'right' thing?
My township will take small batteries once or twice a month during their "special garbage" drop off day. They host it at the township office and take electronics and paint and everything except tube tvs.
Assuming you're talking about 6 or 12 volt SLA or wet cell style batteries.
Car batteries are worth money at the scrap yard and a few parts stores.
I let the small 7A 12V UPS batteries pile up, then take them to the scrap yard. They actually pay pretty well for them.
I have about 20lbs of spent alkaline and lithium batteries and my local waste management authority says to just throw them away.
I'm letting them pile up until I find a place. Just seems like a bad thing to put in the landfill?

Is and always has been....on the same order as pouring used motor oil down the sewer .
Have you checked with the recycling center in your county? Their website says they accept batteries but it doesn't seem to indicate if that's car batteries or all kinds, so it would be worth a phone call. http://www.mctx.org/departments/departments_a_-_c/commissioner_s_court/commissioner_precinct_2/recycling_center.php
I leave mine at the local hazardous waste center, with oil, coolant, cfl bulbs, fertilizer... I have to drive to another city and there is only one e season they are open but it beats knowing that stuff is coming back in the drinking water
