let this learn you all a lesson about "it'll never go anywhere"
the P71 needed new front shocks. like all shocks with the nut on the stud on top of the shock shaft, they dont come off once installed and need cut, especially on a cleveland car and they are the 10 year old originals. so i buzzed them off with the cutting wheel. the passenger side nut/washer/stud remnant lodged itself between motor mount and frame. i figured - hey it'll never come out or if it does it'll just fall to the ground harmlessly.
fast forward to 2 days ago, my dad went to move the car as i was not home and he felt it needed moving. i think he just likes driving it way too much. he called me in a panic asking where the hood release was, saying something under the hood was buzzing and burning. he put out the fire with the hose and disconnected the battery and left me to inspect it. i cut off the melted positive cable and got underneath to inspect.
that shock nut/stud/washer remnant had fallen and conveniently lodged itself between the frame and the positive stud on the starter.
so a small fire later which requires new battery cables($3 and almost an hour of cursing at the pull a part) and a new starter ($135 at advance for a new unit) i end up with some very very expensive $30 monroe shocks.
on a good note while at the pull a part i scored an almost new revised intake for it for $27, the stereo plug, some power distribution blocks, nice caprice tails for resale, some turn signals for the trucks, and a 4L80-E from a suburban, and got out of the yard for about half the core value of the transmission.
