the crew cab s10s only came in v6 and auto afiak but cheap to maintain and cheap entry cost i assume
I dont know if they are less rare in other markets and that helps the pricing, but down here in south USA they are stupidly priced and have one of the worst expensive+crappy quotients i can think of. I dont know if i've ever seen one for less than 6 grand.

Unfortunately the Frontier in a Crew cab isn't small. It's 11" shorter than a GMT800 CCSB truck with less interior room and capabilities.
Either you're going to have to give a little on the size, or you're not going to fit 4 adults.

I love my 2004 1st Gen Tacoma Double Cab. One of the last "small" trucks. The seats are flat and hurt my butt. That's the only thing I don't like about it. I've always been a car guy too, but love this truck. Just watch for frame rust.
I loved my 3rd Gen 4Runner, they are pretty much indestructible. I know you mention camping, but we took mine to 24 Hours of Daytona a couple times and it was easy enough to fold down the back seats and sleep in a pinch. It could definitely tow what you need (although not a ton more), and the 3rd Gen was just right-sized (it appears that Rav4's are now approaching the size of that generation 4Runner).

Seems like a 2000-04 dakota quad would be a good start. Cheap to fix. I'm actively shopping them, and am finding 120k v8's for about $4k average.
