As boring as it is... Jeep Cherokee XJ. They really are the Miata for when you need 4wd.

Even better - a Toyota Van 4WD. Although I think most of the remaining few have migrated to the Pacific Northwest.

By that logic, Previa AWD because why not have a mid-engined supercharged van?
fixed
Kreb said:I love the Element hack in many ways, but seem to recall that it had a pretty sucky AWD system which is something to consider if you're actually going to bang on this type of vehicle a little. Many of these "cute utes" have AWD more appropriate for snow and gravel than serious rock and mud.
I just sent a friend w/an AWD Element the (crappy) pic below of one I just saw at lunch. He happened to mention that with decent wheels & tires they’re apparently pretty competent on rough trails.
I vote Suzuki sidekick or x90.solid capable vehicles. Parts are cheap and they are highway friendly.
suzuki's are the sweet spot for price vs. capability vs. aftermarket support.
Xj's are starting to creep up in cost.
Kj's can be lifted, but why...
I really like montero's...
I am no help.
At this point, if you want a cheap XJ, you buy a ZJ or WJ. They're cheaper than water and just as capable (but a little bigger). And no stupid leaf springs...
The KJ is the Patriot and whatever it's twin was?
Please keep going, there are enough bad ideas to keep me two terrible cars a year for a decade and I want MORE!
In reply to mazdeuce - Seth :
KJ is the first-generation Liberty. There was a CRD version that had a 160hp/295lb-ft 2.8L VM Motori common-rail turbo diesel from '05-'06 (and wasn't even legal to sell in all 50 states, such as California and New York). As I recall, the problem is, they are either gutless due to a ChryCo ECM reprogram or have a ton of power but a transmission ready to explode from not having the reprogram performed.
In reply to mazdeuce - Seth :
No, KJ is the 02 - 07 (1st gen) Liberty. Compass / Patriot are the MK.

Also, ZJs have some of the most comfortable front seats known to man.
Volvo TP21
OK, I admit that I have lost the point of this thread and am just posting odd cars with AWD
