I feel it is time to change the gear oil in the fiance's 08 smart. I've decided what gear oil to use but am getting conflicting information on the capacity. Amsoil states the capacity as 3 pints, whereas evilution (Smart how-to site) lists it as 2.3 liters. Obviously those numbers don't work. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to find a definitive number, and don't suggest the vehicle's manual. berkeleying car's manual doesn't even tell you what weight of oil to use in the engine!

Alot of the evilution info is based on the 450 smart.

Never mind apparently smart published an updated manual which lists the transmission oil capacity... but it still does not list what weight of oil for the engine.

10-40 for the engine. It's served me well for 100,000 miles
I'll check at work tomorrow. I'm a gen-u-ine factory trained Smart tech. For now.
On a related note whenever I drive one in I butcher a quote from Army of Darkness in my head: Drive smart. Drive S-Mart!

Sure you're not confusing it with the Wartburg?
I've found plenty of oils that meet the MB specs. Been running Mobil 1 0w-40, but am thinking of switching to a 5w-30 that meets the requirements.
Found this via google search.
Just to confirm, it is about 2.5l. So buying 3 US quarts will do. You should have some left.
The weight is 75W90. I use Redline MT-90, which is good with GL-4.
Since this was brought back from the dead... Finally got around to changing the fluid in the Smart, used MT90 as that is what my miata needs as well. The fiance said she noticed a difference, I figured she was trying to make me feel good about working on her car. Got to drive the car last night and wow, if changing the tranny oil in my miata makes as big a difference I'll be a redline customer for a long time. Not being able to feel the transmission in the smart made me skeptical, but shifts are quicker, smoother, and quieter. The $40 or so in oil was worth it.
As a side note, when she bought the car I was concerned about the ability to work on it, so far the car has been straightforward on maintenance. Spark plugs were a bit of a pain but nothing like a 4th gen camaro. Transmission drain and fill plugs were easily accessible. For as tight as the engine bay is, the work has been reasonably pleasurable.
