and I'm getting a new engine put in for free. I'm at nearly 62k miles. So, should I keep the car, or sell it and get into some kind of comparable vehicle? Something along the lines of S2000, Boxster S, Z06, perhaps.

If you can sell it and swing a Z06, I would be awful tempted. I'd probably keep it though. With a new engine you should be good for another 60K.
The warranty is 8 years/100k miles. So, I've got 38k miles or until 2014; whichever comes first. Mazda covers the engine, so I have no interest in paying to put anything else in. I'm just wondering if I should sell it while I can still get some decent money for it.

I thought the joke was already implied
John Finger was a perenial strong contender and frequent winner at the Chimney Rock hill climb. See this link for some history.

As was mentioned already, I'm getting a free engine. Why would I put an LS1 in when there are plenty of LS2's and LS3's floating around?
"LS1" doesn't always mean LS1. sell the factory fresh renesis you pull out of it to someone. you can even let them test drive before you extract it.
just because the dealer installs it, doesn't mean you have to leave it in there.
You have a free engine and a 38k mile warranty, swing by carmax and see what they offer. Could be that the car is better off being yours than being turned into cash.
Sell it andbuy a car that doesn't need a new engine every 60k miles? That would be my personal opinion. I wouldn't even consider hanging onto a car that it's ok for an engine to lose compression at 62k miles and no one is outraged about it....and in fact seem to expect it.
I am sorry about your engine. What type oil do you use? Do you add 2 stroke oil to your fuel? I ask as I have a RX-8. Another guy here in Flint has 140,000 miles on his 2006 with the original engine. He runs Mobil 1 and no 2 stroke oil. I have been using Castrol 10 w 40 and 4-5 oz of 2 stroke oil every other tank of gasoline. I have 29,000 miles on mine with out any problems yet.
What are the signs of low compression on a rotary? Mine's at 90k, and still pulls strong. Kind of a lumpier idle than I remember, but everything else checks out.
Mine still runs fine, it just has slight trouble starting when it's hot. The "brain" in the RX8 is picky, so the car isn't nearly as tolerant of low compression as the older 13b's. I recognized this and got a compression test. The power loss is very gradual, so I didn't really notice it until I drove another RX8. Mine is a 2006 that I've had since 15k miles. I was meticulous with my maintenance. New oil (Castrol 10w40) and filter ever 3000 miles. I always warmed it up properly, etc etc. I replaced the plugs, wires, and coils at 55k miles. I've taken very good care of this car. I'm seriously thinking about getting a Corvette. I had planned on keeping the car for many years, but now I feel that I should sell it while I can still get some decent money for it. Anyone want a Phantom Blue Mica RX8 with a fresh engine?

Carmax is probably the worst place to sell your car. I took it there for E36 M3s and giggles one day, and they offered me $9500 after their exhaustive inspection.

That is a sad statement. is this the 1930's?
I love the RX-8, but I wouldn't own one. When I get the funds together I'm picking up an S2000. This is after regularly driving both an RX-8 and a 2002 Z06. I have a feeling the resale value of RX-8's is going to decrease dramatically pretty soon. I would get out now while it's still worth a good amount.
