It's the yamaha v6 version with an automatic. The engine is a work of art, the rest of the car - not so much. I was thinking maybe I could swap it into one of the shells I have laying around.... TR7 coupe, Datsun 280, rabbit truck...

What do y'all think?

Rabbit Truck yes....

If that's the 3.0L version, I'm pretty sure it will bolt up to a Ranger 3.0L RWD transmission...

Mine is an auto so it got the 3.2 liter.

yeah I'd start by seeing what bell housing adapters are made and/or what trans can bolt to it.

Technically, that car has the 3.2L version of the Yamaha v6. The manual transmissions had 3.0L plants. The engine has a factory rev limit of ~7000 rpm, but that is limited by the accessory drive. The engine is good for 8000+.

I race(d) one of those in 24h of Lemons, and it was competitive if we didn't do something stupid to kill our placement. All in all, you're right... the car that the engine lives in is a turd.

Another Lemons team put the entire Taurus subframe, drivetrain, and suspension in the back of a geo metro. It's known as the MetSHO and has gone through many iterations... none of them being spectacular.

A guy on Pirate4x4 put the engine in a jeep with twin traction beam front suspension. Search for "alternative rocker." I forget what transmission he used.

Bottom line is this: awesome engine that will swap into other platforms depending on how much fabrication you want to do.

The V6 (3.0L and 3.2L) will both bolt to the ranger 3.0L transmission. There is a TR7 online that someone swapped a SHO v6 into. It was a while ago and the guy passed away before finishing. It required a full custom oil pan. I would pick something with a bit wider engine bay. The Datsun is probably a bit easier. The Rabbit would be great in the bed but it is going to add a foot and a half to the width. I have one of these too that needs a home. I also have the ranger transmission so now it just needs a home.

The intake manifold system is very large which makes for a tall and wide combination. That might make some swaps impossible if you want to run a hood.

Run the hood but cut it out around that sweet intake. You can rotate the intake but it requires a small spacer (not sure how thick) to clear. Oh my, this is a fun solution.

Swap it into a Fox Body Mustang and make people's heads explode.

The TR7 seems like the most likely candidate since it needs carbs and a starter. Is the stock five speed decent? What is the availability of suspension mods?

Are the mount pads also in the same place as a pushrod 3.0? That'd make for an interesting Ranger swap.

From the link "I didn't like the TR much any more because compared to the Eclipse it was a noisy, hard riding, unreliable, stone. " - Are TR7s really that bad?? He is referencing a 1st year DSM.

If you can find a way to get it and a Ranger trans in the 280ZX, you'd essentially have Roadkill's Rotsun, but better in almost every way.

Yes. The Vulcan 3.0 and the SHO Vsixes are based on the same block.

Another potentially amusing option - find a first gen Probe LX and swap the SHO motor in for the Vulcan 3.0.

That adapter might be nice but I wonder what the other parts required for that need to be. The ranger trans can be used with stock parts, I think.

Yes, the Ranger trans will bolt right up. While I have never driven anything with a T5, I can tell you from lots of firsthand experience that the M5OD-R1 is a clunky, notchy truck transmission. Don't get me wrong, my Rangers (4 of them, 3 with 3.0/M5OD-R1) were always very reliable, but that's a pretty agricultural transmission.

I was thinking the same thing. I DD a '94 Ranger with the "big" 4.0 V-6 and 5 speed. I don't know the designation of the trans but it isn't by any means sporty.
