The buggy manufacturers over here have been offering mid engine frames like forever. Ad from 1978:
I saw one once with a rotary on a VW transaxle, it was for dune running. Problem is there aren't many places here in the East side of the Great Satan with dunes that are open to them, it's more a West Coast thing.
