Subaru ej22. Using torque and a bluetooth dongle, I get speed, tach, temp.... live. But, when I go to read codes, I get nothing, not even a no codes present message.

There should be at least a couple codes, down stream 02, starter circuit, trans something or other. (Auto trans controller not there anymore)

Not getting a check eng light either, should have lit by now for the three items above, hence why I went looking for codes.

Light was on before starter swap, when the bat was disconnected for a couple days.

Ps: engine is in a 73 beetle chassis, starter was a beetle starter.

It takes time for the monitors to run, and sometimes they won't set a code for something unplugged for a couple trips.

Update:

Still an issue, about 300 miles later. Still no chk eng light, and as stated I know there should be. After my break down the Thursday night, I figure it was a good time to try and pull codes again.  Emissions readiness shows a bunch of complete items. I have never used this display before so I cant say what it might have shown before. I get live data, rpm, temp, speed, throttle position....,

But still nothing when trying to read codes, logged, pending, or historic. No message of "no fault codes found" it just flashes back to the display screen with the tach, speed, and temp gauges.

I fear its the ECM being there is no chk eng light. Overblown theory ? Please say yes and tell me I am overlooking something simple.

Thanks

Battery disconnect wiped out all the codes. If then fixed it and the reconnected then battery you will not have codes.  No chk engin light no codes. It sounds from your description it is working fine. Take it to your local parts store and have them try reading it. Most do it for free.

The only thing fixed when the battery was disconnected was the beetle starter. That said, I should have at least the following codes.

Down stream o2, cause there is none

Trans something or other, cant remember cause I ignore it, the auto trans controller is no longer present.

Starter circuit, does not exist, using the beetle starter and circuit.

And some times a speed sensor code, when the proximity sensor gets out of adjustment.

The cel light has been on since the swap just a out continously. The only time it has not has been when I clear the codes after tweaking the proximity sensor, just to have it pop up a couple days later.

I know it's not the light, it comes on when powering up.

The strange thing is I could have sworn the torque would say no codes present, if there were no codes. I guess i need to see what happens when i scan something else that is clean.
