So I "built" - well, threw together - a Miata for what I suspected was going to be my last Miata Reunion in 2018, with me being on the wrong coast for Laguna Seca and all that. While the car made the trek over to WV, I ended up selling it shortly afterwards, for, well, reasons. Like "being done with Miatas".

Of course I just got an email announcing the 2021 Reunion is taking place at Road Atlanta and I'm already thinking about taking time off from all the other unfinished projects and throwing another Miata together. My wife will not be happy if I park a non-garaged car on the property so I guess I either need to skip it or find a better place to hide a Miata.

On a completely unrelated note, how thick does concrete have to be to put a four post lift in? Asking for, well, you know...

Rent a garage at the track until after the event?

I guess I could rent a garage or storage unit in town - Road Atlanta is a bit far away to store a car and even Summit Point is over an hour from here.

OTOH a four post lift - which I have the headroom for in the shop - might still be useful even after I decide again that I'm done with Miatas.

And of course I did not use my lunch break to check FB marketplace for Miatas.

I thought 2021 had been moved to New Jersey?

Only if you can tell 2020 and 2021 apart, which I apparently can't.

Of course you are correct, 2020 was supposed to be at Road Atlanta IIRC whereas 2021 is at NJMP. Not that I'm complaining, NJMP is considerably closer than RA.

as for the concrete depth, most lift manufacturers will have it listed on their site.

here is bendpak

looks like for most models of 4 post is 4 1/2 inches

I could hide a miata in one of the garages for a while, but I'm 2 hours away.

Storage unit?

Buy a shipping container so the wife is mad about the shipping container and not what is in the shipping container?

In reply to Mr_Asa :

The problem with a shipping container is placement, the only place where I could put one is one a truck can't get into due the shape of our lot, at least not if they want to use the truck again afterwards.

Perhaps it would make more sense to rent a Miata for the one event than to build a car and rent a place to hide it.

Where's the fun in that?

In case this wasn't obvious, the "hide" part is a bit tongue in cheek. Although it might not be such a bad idea to make sure it would have a roof over its head with the amount of rain it's getting here.

In all seriousness, contact somebody who is a chair or officer within a local autocross group with regards to having the Miata available as a rental for members of the group and they cover the care and feeding of it (all consumables including tires and brakes) well it's available for their use under the condition that they provide storage for it during that time period and that you're able to write off any rental fees they collect as a donation if they're a non-profit.

I think everyone is missing the obvious answer here.  Build another garage.

Finish a project and then when you have room get a Miata.

There seem to be a couple dozen Miatas listed around here in various conditions/price ranges at any given time. Anything specific you're looking for?

Park it at work? I do that sometimes. My boss doesn't like if I park more than 2 overnight though, but is fine with 2. I move them to different spots every few days.

Or park on the street of a decent neighborhood that has on-street parking and just move it to a new block every couple days. Gives you an excuse to take it for a quick spin.

Now why would I do that?

On a more serious note, I'm not planning to sell either of the two hobby cars (the Rollerskate or the 911) anytime soon.

I don't think my wife would appreciate if she found a Miata in the spare bedroom .

I generally like the idea, problem with that is that work for me is "wherever my customer is", which in normal times is pretty much anywhere in the US with a bit of Canada sprinkled in, or right now, my home office.

I haven't planned that far yet, TBH. I've been eyeballing either a late NB or maybe even an NC, but nothing really concrete yet.

If you must buy a miatia, make sure it runs and drives. then sell afterwards very quick or give to the wife.

I've been thinking about that. We do have the space, after all, and I could replace the carport next to my shop with a double garage.

Definitely - the ideal situation would be, buy car, service it, drop rollbar in, possibly upgrade suspension and ideally also fit my Bride seat, although I'm pretty sure that doesn't fit an NA or NB.

Or buy one that already has a decent rollbar and suspension.

You can buy my NC, only thing it would need is a roll bar. Everything else is already top notch, but probably more than you want to spend considering the coilovers alone cost more than two challenge cars.

You'll need to log in to post.
