So I found this 68 Olds Vista Cruiser that has been in this field since 1982, Odometer shows 31K for $400, but...
So although I've been mostly talked out of it, because it really doesn't solve my problem of needing a tow vehicle for next year, I've got some questions about this kind of extreme surface rust.
Roof and rt quarter has absolutely no paint left on it, and there are a few small holes on the roof around the Vista windows, One of my big concerns is if you were to use a rust remover, would there likely be any roof left? Is it likely the rest of the roof my have good metal and those small holes would grow to 1-2"? Or do you you use one of those rust convertors, skim it with filler to smooth it out and paint it? I kept having a vision of using a rust remover and hearing a clunk as the vista window lands on the back seat.
BTW, if anyone wants more pics of this thing I'll be happy to post.
i want it bad
please more pics
it absolutely can tow unless you need a dually.
Given the thickness of the metal in that beast, you'd probably be OK with sanding off the worst of it and hitting it with some POR-15 or equivalent.
Check out this thread on the HAMB board: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=520460&highlight=clr About halfway down the first page he used CLR rust remover to wash the surface rust off the hood of a car in similar condition.
