So I did something semi stupid and sold all of my daily drivable cars. Had a chance to buy I really wanted and it sold out from under me as I was getting the cash together. Sold the lightning, brother in law had his car totaled so he bought the Porsche and I took deposit on the Cadillac to go out in a month or so. Down to the ACR and the Thunderbird. I have about a week before the Porsche is gone.
It's going to be about 60 days until I can get a deal done on another one so I need to rent something. So how does this work on long term rentals. Do they go on my insurance, how horribly expensive do you think it is going to be. Basically I need a Prius or a Corolla for about 500 miles a month.
Other option is to move the ACR over from my classic insurance to my DD insurance but the quote was 650$ a month, they really don't want to do it.
Should be able to rent from pretty much anyone with a weekly or monthly rate. Sometimes if you call the local branch they can give you better pricing than online for special circumstances. Non-airport locations are typically cheaper than airport locations.

Here are some places local to you
I believe pretty much all the big car rental companies will rent you cars for 60 days, but the rates are different for the longer term rentals. Not sure if they're better or worse.
Have you considered taking over a lease from someone who's got, like, 3 months left on their lease and wants to get out? That might be another option, although probably more hassle than just to hits up Hertz & Co.
What do you have your eye on next?
Just go on craigslist and buy a $1000 ford escort, drive it for a couple months, wash and wax it and sell it for $1500
here you go, low mileage and it's even a stick!

There was a manual Ithaca verde murcilago for sale that wanted. I could easily get a e-gear but this one was manual and somehow in budget and had a good service history and more importantly had some miles so I would not feel bad using it. Then put the ACR into storage and get something cheap to use ever day like a used RX300.
I did not think this was a thing but locally there are some small monthly rental places but its 400$ for a 2002 Civic. Apparently that covers insurance and unlimited miles though.
I rent a lot for work -- I can get a full-size rental with unlimited miles for $400-500 (without add-on insurance.) I'd recommend swinging by an off-aiport rental agency and talking to the manager to see what they can do.
Depending on the price break, you might just do weekly rentals so you can try a few different appliances on for size. I like Charger GTs and Maximas the most out of the rental fleet right now in the standard/full-size class. Camry SEs and Optimas aren't as fast, but are surprisingly fun to drive. Altimas, Malibus, Fusions, and any Hyundai are a snooze fest. Almost never see Hondas. Got a Regal GS once and it made fun turbo noises, but was still pretty meh.
tldr; even if you're renting for a month, shop for a 'good' car.

Enterprise has done monthly rentals for some of my coworkers who were on long-term assignment with me in NH. Definitely cheaper that way, but I'd imagine rates will vary depending on location and the car rented. He usually had a Hyundai or a Nissan.
If you go the route of changing weekly, what about Turo? I bet you could get anything from exotics to classics where you are. Might be a fun way to cover that you need a car for two months while testing out everything you've had an itch to drive.

This is a funny thread. I read "ACR" as in Neon, but I think OP means Viper after the Lambo comment. Either way, don't think OP is looking for a quick flip on Craigslist to make a few hundred bucks. :)

Actually that is totally what I would do but right now dealing with the DMV on another car and adding it to insurance would be a serious pain. I wish I had kept the crappy civic I was building into a deathkart. I could do a car with no doors or windows for a week or so.
In other news I got ahold of a 2008 civic on a weekly price of 150$ a month and that includes insurance so cisis averted. No walking to work.

Some good ideas in the thread. Around here they used to have a company called rent a wreck, which were older cars worth say $3k. Not sure how cost sensitive you are.
Double check your auto policy. Depending on what it covers, it might be worthwhile to sign up for a credit card with rental coverage, if you don't already have one.

They way that most auto insurance policies work is that they will cover any car you buy for up to 30 days without you telling them about it. After 30 days they no longer will provide coverage unless you list it on your policy.

Damn where'd you find that?

Why would you assume that? Is it because he comes here talking about expensive cars, so you assume he has big bucks? Big bucks would just move the insurance for the $650, or head to Enterprise and grab a car, not come here to try and brag, then rent a 12 year old civic to save $500.

I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the Murcilago. I'm planning to sell my 360 and one of the 911s to pick up something else and a gated Murcilago is at the top of the list.
He’s busy enjoying the 2008 Honda to speak on the Murcilago at the moment.
Besides the major rental stores, I think those rent-a-beater places that have older vehicles often rent by the month.

It's unique and frankly I think it will appreciate a good bit in the next say 5 years which means I may even break even on it with maintaince.Only in the manual though I would imagine. Compared to a 360/430 its a dinosaur though. I see it as a Diablo that you can put 3K miles a year on with trips and car shows and not have it completely bankrupt you. Its not something I would buy to go fast though. Mind you I have only driven the e-gear which has some serious faults.
But Its fun to drive, enjoyable at moderate street friendly speeds and I love the design. I have never really gotten to pull anything like it apart so maintaining it at home would be a new experience from the usual vintage stuff I do and well I just love the look of them. Plus it fits a hole in the collection.
As for the monthly rental I have Seriously berkeleyed up BAD luck when it comes to daily drivers. I have been hit a bunch, l get hit about once every two maybe two and a half year. Never at fault and my commute is 7 miles. So cheap and cheerful works for me and if it gets hit I am not going to cry over it just hand it back. I wanted something I could drop like a hot rock and not have to resell as well if something did pop up quickly. California is not really setup to register and drive cars for short periods of times and smog rules are so heinous that a lot of cheap and cheerful stuff won't pass anyway.
My regular car insurance covers rental cars at no extra cost. I'm not sure if my collector car policies include that or not. Speaking of collector car policies. Some of them require you to have another non-collector car which could be an issue for the OP if he's out of daily drivers.

In reply to wearymicrobe :
I have heard the Murci is a little crude. The 360 is like a scalpel and I'm looking for another hammer like my 930. We'll see what my mood is like is several months though after the other cars have sold.

As someone who is at AAA every other week, registering a new to me cheap car, and going online and adding insurance for my cars, in CA. I think it is quite easy actually. I don't go to the DMV anymore. Even get out of state cars VIN Verification done in my driveway. Click of the mouse, it is insured, and registration at my local AAA takes 10 minutes max, there is never anyone there. Also given CA requires seller to smog the car, and you are good for 2 years, I haven't smogged a car in forever. Also I found a "county" to register my car, so that in event I keep a car longer than 2 years (usually don't), those particular areas don't even require me to smog. Ca has 58 counties, only 34 requires smog.

I couldn't imagine using a Murci as a daily driver. Then if you get hit as often as you do in traffic, do you really want that to happen to a Murci?
