The Fall Guy was awesome*, especially the theme song. Love this cover version.

*Actually it doesn't hold up at all, but man I remember it as being awesome.

Racing pickup trucks is stupid. Racing them in the dirt is stupid.

There is a perfect starting point for this right now on my local CL. Damn just having moved halfway across the country and being broke...

I think starting with a flareside is the best idea. Wider rear fenders are easily made without having to tub the bed

Did you really think anyone on this forum would think this idea was stupid?

I've thought the same but with the 88-98 body style, reg cab, sportside bed. The suspension up front is better than the older and there are already a lot of options straight off the shelf.

Something like this:

I agree! (And I dd the Ford version of that!)

I'll have to see what the starting weight might be.

Start with a dually! So grip. Much wide. Very wheelie.

Ihave fun with my F-100 in 2 wheel drive on the dirt roads. I have considered getting a 2x4 version just for what you have in mind.

Actually yeah, I thought I would get a whole bunch of "you can't autocross and rallycross the same vehicle, too much of a compromise for each type of racing makes it not suitable for anything" and "it doesn't make any sense to start with the wrong tool for the job, you need a Miata with a hardtop for rallyx another one set up autox and another one for DD duties"

Plenty of space, you could always go mid engine.....

Now that, is stupid.

This has a camaro subframe and 5 speed transmission. It still has the straight six with a one barrel carburetor.

Well, I'd be lying if I said some of those thoughts didn't cross my mind and some of those trucks might be at odds with some rallycross courses (going by some of irish's pics), but at the same time - what the hell - go for it! Build it with coilovers so you can set the ride height for the task at hand.

I wonder how an air suspension would hold up to the abuse?

With an air suspension wouldn't it be a lot more expensive of a fix if you busted something?

Still obsessing about this idea, scouring every craigslist within 500 miles. Lots and lots of perfect starting points.

However the recent autocrossing a small pickup thread has thrown a wrench into my thought process. I'm starting to think that an S10 would be a better starting point.

S10 pros;

  • Starts out pretty much right at the 3000# weight minimum of CAM

  • Narrower body for slipping through tight sections of cones better

  • Can be found in better condition for cheaper prices

  • If starting with a V6 truck very little weight penalty for aluminum top end V8 swap

  • Proven easy swap

S10 cons;

  • Tight cramped interior

  • Much smaller wheel wells limits width for autox wheel and tire setups and also drastically limits rallyx tire choices

  • V8 has to be swapped in/rear differential may not live with V8 torque

Full size pros;

  • Already V8

  • Will swallow massive wheel an tire combos and plenty of off road options

  • More of a "blank canvas" in my mind

Full size cons;

  • Starts out heavier/more work to get down to minimum

  • Very wide

  • More expensive starting point

I just don't know. Which direction would you go and why?

Sounds like you're trying to take a Dirt Modified car to a rallycross course in a very roundabout way.
