Yeah the sales dude tried to get me to look at one. I finally had to tell him "No, just no. It's hideous, and it's car-based. I own two REAL Cherokees."
I leased a Cherokee Trailhawk V6 as a daily driver, I kinda like it?
I really did want the EcoDiesel GC though...BUT SO MUCH MONEYS THOUGH

In reply to Tom_Spangler: Look at the Durango, same chassis but extended with 3rd row seat.
Durango doesn't look as good, though. I'll be honest, I'm superficial, the main thing I like about the JGC is the looks. We'll probably end up with another crossover anyhow, since I have truck for towing.

I recently replaced my '07 Legacy GT specB with a CPO '14 GC Summit ecodiesel and LOVE IT so far. Picked it up in Cleveland and got 30mpg on the way home to Detroit. Good fit for the family with two kids and a great road vehicle so far. I wasn't looking for the Summit due to the bling, but this one was priced less that most Limited's that I'd found with similar miles so I bought it. I liked the Durango but we have on Oddity for third row duty when needed and it isn't offered with the diesel.
I intend to take this thing off road so the MI ORV stickers are in place. A trip to the Silver Lake sand dunes is in our near future. I found a great deal on a set of take off Durango wheels and mounted up some Toyo AT II tires so I'm ready to go!
The Cherokee has grown on me, when it came out I despised it but now it's just another crossover thingy.
I haven't had a chance to drive one of these to feel how the diesel's torque works in daily traffic, but I'd love the chance. It's a great looking vehicle, and a 7,400 lb tow rating is excellent. Bravo Jeep. And shame on you for ruining the Cherokee.
But as much as I love the Jeep brand, I'd still have a hard time getting this over the Ram 1500 Ecodiesel. Crew cab Ram has huge amounts of interior space, same fuel economy specs, even more towing capacity if you need it, and you get the benefit of a truck bed. I suppose if you truly didn't have any use for the truck bed then the GC is better, but I don't live in that world. The cashier at Lowes is starting to recognize me these days haha. I have a F150 Screw now with the 6.5' bed, and it's one of the best vehicles I've ever owned, minus atrocious fuel economy from the 5.4L (I avg 12 mpg city/commuting). Fix the fuel economy with the diesel and perhaps it's the perfect vehicle?
The one thing that might break me though is if/when the Ecodiesel shows up in the 4 door Wrangler. If somehow they'll give it a tow rating where I can get my Miata on a trailer behind it, I think they'll have me.

Good to hear! Too bad it's 20 years late but at least it's here now.
You know it sucks that in 2001-4 Chrysler engineered a brand new diesel engine but some American manager canceled the program right before launch, I mean the thing was finished. All done as a poor attempt to gain political favor with Daimler executives. Just use Daimler Benz diesels he said. Not actually doing any research to realize none of them would work on USA fuel standards.
One of the many examples of when Americans at Chrysler screwed over their own company for political positioning during the merger.
So yes late but only due to greedy SOBs.
And for that matter, there's been diesel Grand Cherokees for awhile. This is just the first one that's really generating a buzz for some reason.

I really enjoy the 8 speed auto. I just hope I'll be still saying that in a few years. The Race Mode is great for pretending you're in an exotic sports car and flapping paddles. I wonder how that feels with the diesel!?!?
Both the jgc and Durango should be nice since they are mb ml350 based....
