Has anyone driven in a Texas Mile event?
I'm considering giving it a try in October if I can get registered. Yes, I'll be doing it in my Mazda2, and yes, I'll be slow. Oddly enough driving super fast isn't really my goal (though driving as fast as the 2 will go is) I really want to have a chance to legally take my car all the way to the end, and I want to get experience participating in something like this is a slower car before I ever try it in one that's actually fast. I'd also get to hang out with some really truly fast cars which would be cool.
The only concern I really have is that people might be pissed at me being a 'tourist' and taking up run time when there are some serious fast cars wanting to give it a go.
Any thoughts?

Any rules against rentals?

Yeah. The rule is don't let the rental company know what you are going to do with the car.

I did check the rules and I can't find anything about rentals. You do have to have a fire extinguisher hard mounted within reach. That may or may not be hard to pull off with a rental. Holes in carpet close right up when you pull out screws, right?

If you pull up the console, and mount the extinguisher there who is any wiser? Re-mount the console when you are done and away you go.

I mean I would never do that with a rental car.

Hertz rents corvettes :)

See, this is why I think I need to drive it in the Mazda first, because renting a vette to do it sound like a brilliant idea.

I don't get the appeal to these events unless you have a car that will top 200mph.
Go to a Rio Grande Valley Porsche Club track day. The straights usually approach a mile and you get to turn and brake and do other cool stuff besides going straight.

Can someone tell me EXACTLY where this is run?

Reason I am asking is that in the early to mid '80s I lived in Beeville (not really all that far from Goliad) and I'm wondering if it's run at the old Navy "auxilary"(sp?) flight line that was/is still? there. I was in a squadron that used that flight line, but was never actually at the site.

As far as I'm concerned, the WHOLE state of Texas is a racetrack of sorts, that is, you only visit for special occasions, only stay a few hours, and then get in your vehicle and leave the area like you'd rather be ANYPLACE else.

Yep, it's a Naval Air Station strip.

I've got a couple of track days on my list of things to do as well, don't worry. I've made it to my later 30's with no racing talent and no real internal drive to win. Now that I finally have the money that I could spend to pursue racing, I'm not sure exactly what I want to do, or if I want to do it at all. I like autocross and I do it twice a month, I don't have to be fast or competitive to know that I'm having fun. I think I might like driving on a real track, and that's where the track days are coming in as a start to that. I rallycrossed once and loved it and I need to do that more. I've never drag raced, I'm not sure I'd like it, but I think I need to try it first. The same goes for an event like the Texas mile, or the Big Bend open road race for that matter. These are events that are sort of local to me right now, and it seems a shame to not at least give them a try because I think that road racing will be cooler.
That was the point of starting the thread. I've never done it. I think I want to give it a try. Has anyone here done it or an event like it, and if so, how did it go?

Im curious to give it a shot as well. The <190mph rules seem pretty easy to meet.
