Man, what a crazy few days! I honest feel like the last week or so has been a whirlwind. Between deciding last second to go, dusting off the ScAries, packing, arranging the time out of work, the trip down and the whole event, I'm still somewhat shocked by how everything ended up going for us. I'm proud of how the car did, but I'm even more proud of the group of people that we've been lucky enough to get to know and race with. I know this is a bit long, but bear with me.

This is my 5th year participating in the Challenge. After really trying to do well the first four attempts with the flamed Shadow and then with the ScAries, I was pretty well burnt out after last year. Part of that was my own doing. Looking back, I was so focused on trying to win, I think I may have been missing out on some of the fun of the event. I had decided I wasn't going to go this year and for 11 1/2 months, that was the case. I then started to have some second thoughts. A few emails to Per, some to the local SDAC guys and next thing I knew, I was back in.

This year, I went into it with a different attitude. I wanted to do well, but I had conceded from the moment I emailed Per that I wasn't going to win. I was just going to have a good time. After the autox and the concours, we realized we had a pretty good shot. All I had to do was knock out a reasonable drag time.

As many of you know know, I grenaded an axle on my first pass. One of the places it broke was in the diff at the splines. The only way we could figure to get it out without removing and disassembling the transmission was with a big magnet, with our fingers crossed the the splines weren't twisted. This is where I realized what I was missing in years past at the Challenge...numerous Challengers, including those who were also in the hunt for the win came over offering to help tear the car apart, go buy parts, hunt for tools, etc. This includes GRM staff. Andy Ried, Per, Gary, Tom and others all were looking to help. Within minutes, I had at least 7 magnets from competitors of varying sizes to try to get the broken stub out of the transmission. In the end, the ones that came up with the magic magnet were the External Combustion guys, who were also the guys who won the autox and were right behind us in the concours. They stood a lot to gain without the ScAries making a pass, and they offered up as much help as they could give to get me running again. That was huge.

There were a ton of others that helped or offered to help, including Steve (aussiemg), the guys with the fast drag Civic, Phil Mickler and my new teamates from Tampa (Yay!). It was such a hectic day, I know I forgot many others....but thanks to everyone.

So, long story short....the Challenge and the Challengers absolutely rock. I had a great time racing with all of you. Looking forward to $2013 already.

Congrats again on the big win! You guys built a car that was truely in a class of it's own.

External Combustion, class act, and proved that the best sports car for 2 grand is a Jeep Cherokee!

Thanks to the GRM staff for all their hardwork, giving us dorks a place to gather and show off our wares to one another. Thanks to all the competitors that make this event feel like a family reunion, complete with wierd uncle.

I had an awesome time. Can't wait until next year. Thanks to the GRM staff for a great event. And thanks to all the people there who let us borrow tools and gave us advice as we tried to get the 280ZX to run right.

I was on the fence whether I was going to attend until about two weeks before. Fortunately, or unfortunately, the only car that was running and within budget was my Metro. I'm glad I went. The guy I brought with was a first timer and completely unfamiliar with GRM at all. All of you guys are the reason he'll be back with a car next year.

That was you in the Metro...did you end up getting the drag time you were shooting for? Last I saw, there was a driver switch about to take place.

Congratu-berkeleying-lations!

Awesomeness incarnate and major props to External Combustion.

Now, who's going to bring an early Dakota with a turbo-4 to dethrone Pat and the Jeep?

I've been to the Challenge 3 times now ('09, '10, and now '12) and each time, I find myself mystified at how crazy fast you guys got those cars moving. My first year there, a quick conversation with you and your team after the banquet inspired me to go out and get my own Turbo Dodge product the following year, and right from this forum, no less. The SDAC is truly a great group of people, and I'm glad you guys got the win this year! Our team was happy to help you guys when you needed it, and you helped us out as well, which was much appreciated. The level of good sportsmanship at the Challenge this year seriously restored my faith in humanity.

It felt like all weekend we were locked in a battle with you guys and with Dave Melton's team, yet we were still having a blast together. I cannot wait to come back again, and who knows, there may be another Turbo Dodge to look out for!

Same here. We had a great group this year.

Plus we got to discuss metal.

Special thanks to the Little Lambo team for letting me borrow a helmet. (I'll remember mine next year, i promise.)

And thanks to Jeremy and Dan for picking up new bolts for me to put my turbo back on in time to at least get a time that didn't make me feel like a total failure at the drags, i suppose.

Clutch is now dead, btw...

@Pat----

No 19's for us, 100lb lighter driver didn't do it with the higher humidity/temps.

Would also like to confer with you guys on some project stuff since we're local to each other. I don't know turbos like you guys and that's our next step. We're down around Andrews.

Just slipping like on saturday night i think. I should be able to baby it through winter, but i was hoping to get in a drag run locally on all the boost to see what it would do. Not gonna happen now.

The win couldn't have gone to nicer guys. When Andy came over looking for my magnet I knew it had a chance to make a big change in the standings because the ScAries had done so well and it had a good chance to win the drags. But I never hessitated, this is what the Challenge is all about. We don't go down trying to win, we just want to bring a vehicle we are proud of and have some fun with all of you.

It made me happy to see the ScAries run again, and quickly. Congrats to all the guys at SDAC who helped build this car, you desearve this win.

I was out in the parking lot on Friday night fiddling with my tune a little bit and got to talking with GRM's photog (and I apologize for not remembering your name!) about this very topic. It is so cool to see the sportsmanship that everyone puts on display at the Challenge each year. I know I don't have anywhere near the level of skill required to "run with the big dogs" as it were, but that doesn't stop anybody from letting me pester them with questions and gain in a weekend the kind of education that it would take years to get otherwise. Seeing cars and people like that humbles and inspires me.

I kept meaning to come over and talk to you about your car, but never really found the time.

Are you bringing it back next year?

That's a good question! On the one hand, I kind of feel like I'm not going to be able to improve the car enough to do that much better. At the same time, though, I'd really like to see what I can do after applying some of the lessons I learned last week, and it'd be easier and cheaper than finding another car and starting over...

What's your budget like?

After this year, i'm a firm believer in bringing each car twice. I'll be bringing mine back for a last Hail Mary, assuming it survives a fourth year of me daily driving it.

I'm just a nudge under $2000 right now. But I can easily get about $640 back in by taking out the Stratus clutch, putting the old repaired CV back on, removing the wideband, and taking out the KYB struts. I'd need to figure in some new tires, since the front pair got kind of thrashed.

This was actually the car's second appearance, and what a difference six years makes!
