Good point. Not huge for a modern sports coupe, but huge compared to a Miata or a Midget. I get it.

If I was to replace the Miata, it would be with another roadster or sports coupe which surpassed it in both handling and power. So the GTO isn't on my radar - I already have an E36 M3 so I don't want a second sedan. I do enjoy listening to you guys debate though ;)

Not quite.. not yet...

Admittedly this is from online window shopping but I've seen several SCs in what looked like decent condition on Pelican over the past year or so around that price point. Find another 2-3k and the choice seems to get a lot easier, though.

The prices for impact bumper 911s and 964s seem to be a little 'compressed' at the moment as the bread-and-butter versions don't seem to be that collectible yet and the downward price pressure from 993s and 996s still seems to affect them somewhat.

The GTO is the basis also for the new Camaro. Same suspension design and some common parts. I have owned my 2004 for 3 years now and it has been incredibly reliable. Not your common GM product. I have replaced the shocks and front end bushings(partly to get adjustable caster) and while you will never confuse it for a miata on the Dragon, there are very few stock cars that can compete with its performance especially when you consider its comfort and luxury. There arent many cars that ever challenge me. I did buy the '04 to get the smoother look I preferred over the fake hood-scooped hood on the LS2 cars. Unless you pull out the stop watch, you will never notice the performance difference. The only thing that I have changed was the wheels; I added 18" rims with a chrome lip over the wimpy stock rims.

To answer the original question, I would spend that money on a TR6.

I've been looking longingly at S2000's and S52 M Roadsters recently, but more with an eye towards STR, so saving money on mods would be a moot argument.

TR6 = classic British roadster with some real guts. I love those things.

It's still a good deal with a $499 divorce.
