Keith's comment in the V6 thread about the GM V6 got me to thinking. What are the best sounding engines in the world? I've always been partial to V8s of just about any flavor and the scream of a rotary, but there are some other cool ones out there. VW's little V6, Nissan's VQ series, or even the inline 4s that Yamaha and Honda use in the bikes.

So start your list and back it up with sound.

Here's a list I found online. I even agree with most of his choices.

Here is some old school iron.

I particularly liked the black Camaro that hit the wall. Handled like crap, but sounded so sweet.

And of course the rotary.

We were out riding our bikes one day. It looked like the local Porsche club was out on the back roads of Arkansas. Out in front was a new Ferrari. I'd have to say that motor was awesome sounding.

Oh my. Even with the crappy speakers on my laptop...

On rotaries:

The 787B. The idle reminds me of a BB Chevy with a REALLY nasty cam, lots of overlap. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=beFl9J6xRCU

The 'flyby': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7ZpK0PShdI

What an incredible sound. That unearthly wail is like nothing else.

A fantastic engine sound is the one thing my Jensen Healey does not really have, unfortunately. Dunno why.

As much as I have no use for Subarus, I do think they sound great. On the flip side, I hate the sound of a rotary. It sounds like a bad sounding 2 stroke combined with a bad sounding 4 stroke.

I like the sound of my Swift GT at 8500

Many of you guys in South GA/ N FL probably know this car - Rob Lewis' Black 65 Mustang is the best sounding engine I've ever heard. the in car video doesn't do it justice, it completely overwhelms the mic. The idle at the beginning is closer to the way the car sounds.

When he's on course and i'm marshaling I have a hard time paying attention. I just stand there with a huge smile and tight pants.

Yeah I think the top ten article mostly covered it. I was going to mention the Lambo V12 (specifically the one in the Aventador, that sounds like the unholy spawn of a supercar and a sportbike), LS1, Ford 302 and 4AGE 16v.

It's called "brap" in the rotary universe.

I did the math on a peripheral port once, it works out to something like a 400 degree cam on an 80 degree lobe center, or something like that. (And yes, when my friend got the car in GT5, I made sure that it idled right)

It sounds great, but if you don't have a heavy flywheel, trying to drive at light throttle makes you find ALL the lash in your drivetrain.

I'm not much a fan of multi-rotor engines, preferring the raw, visceral, raspy sound of the two-rotor engines. Like this one:

About a decade ago I found myself behind a Ferrari Testerosa in California at a stop light. Took me a second to figure out what it was as I'd never seen a wild one before. He was first in line and left briskly. Those first two gears were the best engine note I've ever heard in person.
