We where testing our sequential T56. I threw a GoPro on the bumper to capture the noise. what i wasn't expecting was to see the exhaust grow. our engineer told me that all stainless grows when it gets heated.

Wow that exhaust note sounds just like a harmonica

Did the exhaust shrink back? That is a good amount of expansion almost like something came loose.

That's why exhaust pipes have rubber mounts. I've worked on the design of process equipment in factories where we had to put a number of expansion joints in large stainless pipes, as they would grow a foot or more from heat.

We had a GTO that did that... owner came back a couple weeks after we did an install and said the exhaust was hitting. Put it up on the lift and 1/2"-1" clearance everywhere. Drove it and came back, still good clearance. Drove it HARD and one of the mufflers was hitting the rear valence.

In reply to Knurled:

I had a similar issue on my Tundra. Every time I commuted there was an annoying (what I thought was suspension) squeak as I bounced down the road. I ripped apart the rear leaf packs and shocks multiple times to no avail. Finally I realized it only happened when hot, so I immediately drove up an an alignment rack as soon as I got to work one morning. The damn crossover was hitting the frame rail and squeaking even though it had a couple of inches of clearance every other time I had checked it. Months of annoyance fixed with five minutes of adjustment.

It was my understanding that most things expand when hot ... How much? Depends on the coefficient of thermal expansion. Aluminized steel sheds heat faster, thats probably why it does not expand as much.
