A first gen Impreza Wagon weighs 2800lbs, so 50 over your cut-off. Put the 2.5l NA motor in as suggested above. Lots of aftermarket. Should get really close to 30mpg on the highway. Lighter wheels, remove the spare/tools and rear seat for track days and you will be under your weight limit. Light battery, aluminium hood, JDM bumper beams and you are at 2700lbs. Your choice of trackdays, autox or rallyx.

Do these exist in the US in manual trans form?

I've never seen one and manuals on these cars are rare to begin with.

Nope, sportcross were never released anywhere with a stick. Many have been swapped, some with 6 speed v160 getrags from jza80 supras. The autos are allegedly good to massive power levels and are tiptronic, there are some aftermarket improvements to crispen shifts too. I have a list of part #s somewhere to do either swap with all oe parts if anyone is interested. I actually prefer the sportcross, I find them unique and quite striking. I think a 600hp supra wagon would be absolutely epic.

Hello all, new here and have had a big project going on this very subject. I no longer have access to a computer but if you want to search for my on going build thread it is on feoa and it is called "so I decided to start my build thread". It is a 96 escort wagon with a kl swap, the car started out of course with a 1.9. I will be honest the kl seemed lighter than the cvh but if it is the engine has more mass foward so it will be a tad heaver on the front than stock but I started out with a 24xx lb car.

You are missing the boat with your arbitrary year cut off.

Put me down for 3TC equipped 1980-ish Corolla wagon, 1975 Opel 1900 (Ascona) sportwagon, or Datsun F10 wagon circa 1978.

The Corolla is a great driver, RWD, and has one of the best engines ever built.

The Opel is EFI equipped, RWD, shares handling bits with the Manta, and if you don't like the drive train there is room to swap in almost anything.

The F10 is the smallest of the bunch, quirky styling, and FWD, but the A14 is a great motor and swap potential is there for almost anything.

Wait, why the heck was the '95 Corolla Wagon listed as sporty?! I daily-drive a '93 Toyolla Wagon, and while it's a great commuter vehicle that is quite reliable and can hold a ton of stuff in the rear hatch, it's about as un-sporty as you can get!

It is a nice looking car, probably one of the top wagons i've seen.

Because most wagons are like 4000-5000lbs unless they are near 30 years old, lol
