Some asshat stole my 89 Saab 900 a couple weeks ago. I got it back, thankfully, and a kill switch is going in asap. But I don't want a future would-be thief to even get in the car.
So what are some good visual theft deterrents? I've heard the Club is a joke, and I'm not willing to pull my steering wheel, so I'm looking for other ideas...
glad you got her back.. any damage?
Leave an adolescent male chimpanzee in there at all times.
I would think a Saab w/ a manual trans would already be deterrent enough to the casual thief.
The car had zero damage -- the thief most likely had an old Saab key, and the tumblers on my car are surely worn down.
The problem is that some people know how easy they can be to steal.
I thought the 5-speed was a deterrent, too.
So far this year, 26 old Saab 900s have been stolen in Seattle (well, 25 -- one was stolen twice in a month's time).
Hidden kill switch in line with the efi relay or fuse will do it.
Take the coil to distributor wire with you.
I had an alarm on my '97 240sx. The best part of the whole thing was the red LED light on the dashboard that blinked when the car was off.
You can buy something like this for $5 which will give you a visual deterrent.

How bout a sticker that says "Smile! You're in my crosshairs!"
attach it to this with a thick chain. Theives will keep at least a 1000 foot standoff distance at all times from sheer terror.

And a set of 5 wheel locks on that wheel
if he had an 87 like mine.. he would not the wheel locks (only 4 lug anyway) as that old saab bolt pattern is a VERY odd one
Wait, what?! People steal Swedish cars?? Sorry I have nothing more to add than that.
My rage for auto-related crime is unreasonable. Therefore I will not disclose the thoughts I have on the subject for fear that they may incriminate me in the future.
I had a truck stolen, taken to Mexico, used to smuggle people and then abandoned in the desert. Highlights include, they replaced the tires with newer nicer tires, took the cat and installed a cherry bomb (was full Borla Exhaust), changed the oil (oil filter was not the brand I used), boarded up the topper so people in back couldn't escape through windows, cut wiring harness to rear of truck so no break/ tail lights would function, cut wires to rear door power windows and activated child safe locks so no one could get out, also removed rear seat and center council to fit more people. Was gone 10 days and had 600 miles on it.

I went in a store for 20 min to pick up a usb adapter. Truck had Lojac, but it doesn't work when you are not near any police officers equipped to read the signal (Mexico) and doesn't get turned on until after the report gets filed by the police (8-10 hours).
I would try a cheap blinky light, might make them go onto the next one.
Another option is firearm related stickers. I have a big round H&K crosshairs sticker on my Yugo.
Blinkey light and a gps hard wired to Always hot 12v with a battery backup. Even if they cut the battery I still have a solid week of battery reserve left to find the car with my laptop.
I bought the gps from dealextreme and the blinkey light from radio shack. Don't waste your money on the club, LoJack, or any of the dealer anti theft packages.

When someone tried to steal my 1982 Celica hatch, I went outside (at 4 AM) with a sickle.
Before I went out, I was looking at things on the wall, hedge trimmers? Nope. Swede saw? Nope. Rifle? Nope. I'm in Canada, I would be punished more severely than the thief for just bringing it outside.
The sickle seemed like the best choice. I also have a scythe and briefly thought of going out there like Death, but it was a bit unwieldy.
He did not get my car.
I always thought a way to lock the seat in the forward position would be a good deterrent. You ever get into a car after a really short person has moved the seat up? It's friggen impossible to drive a car like that.
Replace driver side airbag pillow with $10 in quarters. Use a junkyard door lock solenoid to punch the sensor on the front frame rail. You can fire it off the panic button on the remote or use a cell phone so you can call it when you see it moving in your tracker app ($5 with Verizion).
It isn't a deterrent but damn if it wouldn't be the best $10 you ever spent in retribution.

... And then you can get arrested for booby-trapping.

Nonsense. I simply "Changed his mind".
Straight up, there are always way to steal cars. Some only know the easy ones such as in the case of procainestart.
In the case of former, the Mexican smugglers have the capabilities to steal pretty much everything. I think CNBC did a special that is available on Netflix. Flashy lights won't scare them away, neither will any alarm in which they will jam. They can find a kill switch or any other device.
Anything discussed here will only deter your average car thief.
