OK. This is unusual enough I thought I'd post here just to document it. Two small problems have gone away completely unexpectedly.

AWD Astro CEL has been on for about 3 years. Code is P0420 (Cat efficiency). Light suddenly stopped coming on a couple days ago (and no, it's not just burned out). I've done nothing to repair it.

My ~30 year old battery charger's ammeter hasn't worked in ~25 years. No big deal. I can tell by the buzzing and humming when I've made a good connection with it, and it's never caused me to make a mistake, so I never bothered to repair it. Suddenly yesterday the ammeter sprang to life.
I guess I just need to remind myself of little bits of good fortune like this I've had when other things don't go so smoothly.
Here's hoping that in this case, things come in threes.
I almost guarantee the code is still there. Problem not repaired. Take a trip to Autozone to have them read the OBD to confirm.

I'm betting if he's lived with the light on for 3 years he is just happy to get the light to go away. Why would he go check it now? Hopefully there will be a 3rd thing that 'fixes' itself.
I once bought a dead Subaru, the owner's boyfriend killed it by jump starting it backwards. The ECM was completely non responsive even though it had no burnt smell. The car sat for about 6-8 months while the girl was making up her mind. Once I bought it, I had it towed to my house, plugged the ECM in and tried starting it; nothing. So I started hunting a used ECM. A couple of days later on a whim, I plugged the original ECM back in and hit the key; it fired right up. I sold it about six weeks later, I still see it around occasionally.
