I wasn't including the truck and trailer. That 40K was just the load. He is a good bit braver than I am.

My heaviest haul is my fathers camper. It puts my GCVW at 19K pounds. That's enough for me and I haul it with a gas engine. As a general rule, I don't like stinking diesels and gas trucks are stupid cheap.

Remember mine's a 1500 half ton with the smallest engine available and a "low" 6800lb tow capacity. getting that up to 14k+ GVW is crazy.

I saw Bob's truck towing a car once. I spontaneously burst into flames and died.

A half ton, considering the weights, me mentioning half tons specifically, and their relative tow ratings was what I talked about. Did I say a specific type of 1/2 ton. No, because it was not required except for nit-picking purposes.

bearmtnmartin wrote: I do not know where your numbers came from but you seem to be saying that the weight of the tow vehicle must be some function of the weight of the load. I have merely pointed out that if there is a relationship, then pickup manufacturers have clearly not come close to it yet. 14,000 pound tractor- 140,000 pound load equals 10 percent. 6,000 pound pickup - 14,000 pound load equals 43 percent.

Yes, I am well aware. Weight most certainly does affect how well a vehicle can handle a load, especially in emergency situations.

yamaha wrote: Hitemp, comparing a half ton truck rated for 12k lbs towing 12k lbs to a semi tractor thats pulling what its rated to pull makes sense. Your opinion doesn't make a shred of difference on if its safe or stupid.

Actually, my opinion makes any difference I want it to, as it is an opinion. Comparing truck tow ratings to semi tow ratings is not a good logical comparison. Whether in your opinion it is, I could really give a E36 M3 less about considering your attitude.

As for towing way over limit, even in the case of farming, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. The only reason farmers are exempt is not for some reason that they have an angel watching over their shoulders and miraculously avoid catastrophe, it's just so politicians keep getting votes.

Actually, Farmers have no one to sue but themselves. That's why they're exempt. It's not that the ewquipment can't handle the loads, they are forced to enforce low limits to keep litigation to a minimum.

whoa....you got any pics of that? How far were you going and whats the truck and trailer setup? I can't even imagine hitting a small grade with that much weight and a 3/4 or 1ton. my 1 ton Dodge makes plenty of power, but I'd be playing the "what's going to break first" game when trying to pull 70k pounds.

Bobzilla wrote: We towed Dad's tractor/trailer on the Sierra 65 miles round trip with no issues. Tractor alone weighed about 7k lbs, plus a 2k lb trailer. Truck weighs 5500lbs with the wife and I in the front seats. You just don't get in a hurry and plan ahead when driving. EDIT: here it is:

Are those 3500lb axles? My axles and tires are the limiting factor with my trailer. I have a 20ft trailer, but it has 3500lb axles and the load rating on the tires isn't any better..

Yes they are. We didn't know how much we were pulling until AFTER the fact. I ran it across the scales right by my house and we were all a little bit suprised to say the least. I knew it was a heavy load, but we had thought it was closer to 7k lbs and not 9k.

Indiana is flat, and roughly 6 miles from the fields to the elevator, and 2 540bu grain wagons behind the truck. We are cheating a bit by using 4wd low. Tractors normally get used where there are hills, but our only Cummins powered tractor decided to lunch another head gasket

FWIW, the 540bu grain wagons have hydraulic surge brakes in their tongues, so they'll stop themselves pretty well if the truck slows down.

Very few people probably NEED a diesel 1/2 ton, but a lot of people want one, so they will build it. Most of the people in my area don't need their diesel 3/4 tons. How much can a jet ski really weigh?

around here, 3/4 ton diesel trucks generally get used for what they are built for during the week.. and on the weekends they pull large sleds with a moving weight on them 300+ feet at a time...

The 5.0 cummins was developed with the EPA to deliver about 300-350hp and 27 mpg in a half ton ram setting.

In 2006 or 2007 the EPA had the full project info and test vehicle info on an open server. I googled for it and found all the info, the link may have been posted here some time ago. All I know is that I sent the link to some folks at work and the presentation on the EPA server. disappeared.

A 250hp 300lb ft of torque v6 was also developed for the Durango.

I'm pretty sure those aren't the ones I see with 26" rims that are parked in front of an apartment or Mom and Dad's house.
