Some of these I bought on the 99 cent rack. Yes that's how long they have worked for me.
The most expensive was that infrared sensor.  But that's a good 30 years old. Back then I paid $22.00 for it.
The stethoscope   Was one of the 99 cent batch.  as was the ignition wire sensor.
Using that I don't even need to pull a plug wire. Just lay it on top and see if it flashes.
The infrared detector tells me if all 12 ( or whatever )  are firing at about the same.  Just aim  it at each port of the  exhaust manifold and read the temps.
Using those 4 tools I can pretty easily determine where the problem is.
If it's noise the stethoscope pin points where it's coming from.  Yes you have to have a mental picture of your engine to tell a rod knock from a main.   Or wrist pin  from a Con Rod.
Use it to listen to each fuel injector and you'll hear if one isn't working or maybe a little soggy.
Stick it up against the distributor and you can hear the weights opening and closing.   Squeal coming from the idler pulley or water pump?   Listen to each and you'll know
