LOL, the Claremont Lounge is rated higher than the Cheetah. Guess that tells you the price is a greater factor than quality

Unless you have a burning desire to spend a lot of time on interstates I'd tweak the route to go from DC to TN via Skyline Drive and/or Blue Ridge Parkway. I haven't driven Blue Ridge yet but last year drove the entire length of Skyline on a gorgeous late May afternoon and found it a near-religious experience.

Skyline and Blue Ridge are wonderful but extremely lacking in any sense of humor so if you had any ideas about um..."theming" the cars dont.

I'm about 20mi northwest of Philly (19440). I've got a garage and tools and beer. I could lend a hand at the beginning of your trip. Maybe give whatever piles you pick up the once-over before the voyage. And if you're not creepy I've got plenty of floor space (if you are creepy, the backyard has plenty of room for a tent).

Wait-no mention of this yet? It sounds like its up to the GRM'ers along the way to come up with a few Top Gear style challenges.

Thanks for the tips on skyline and blue ridge. We are going to try and stay off the interstates as much as possible, time permitting. If you have any other route suggestions we are all ears.

As far as cars go were just looking for something fun to drive and manual. We will be hitting the Tail of the Dragon so we would rather not do the trip in a van.

I think we might have to open it up to some challenge ideas. I will have to run that by everyone and see what they think.

I posted some info on my blog which is eventually where we will post pictures and stories from the trip. I am hoping we can finalize a departure date this week so we can start making some more concrete plans. Thanks for all of the support and advice.

I could follow you in the Aspire, and it would serve as the "car you don't want to drive if your car breaks down." You know, the Beetle...only worse.

In reply to TBmotorsports:

I'll have to see if I can find the maps but there is an interesting little road we take on our way to get to Deals Gap. On the map its known as SR32 (or 23) but it's been affectionately dubbed the "Ass of the Anetelope" by the BABE crew.

Its like a 1/2 dirt 1/2 paved warmup for Deals Gap, very little (no) traffic and all kinds of hoontastic potential.

Three of us worked in Star Mazda together and me and the groom both race Spec Miata. Not that Karting is not fun, but this is more about an adventure. Thanks for the tips on the cars. I think finding cars will be our biggest hurdle.

Well, that puts things in perspective.

Good luck on your adventure.

I've driven across country twice now and did road trips through the south east and north east so my perspective is skewed.

Bringing this thread back from the dead. We ended up postponing the trip, but we will be catching a plane up to Philly on the 12th. The search has begun for cars in the area so if anyone has any leads or recommendations we would greatly appreciate it. We are basically looking for something that is manual and fun to drive, bonus points if it is project car worthy. We are looking in the 1500 price range. We are still planning to use the same route. Any and all recommendations or help is appreciated.

We also got our blog up and running which is where we will document the trip www.gearbangers.com.

Having lived in the NJ, Pa area I'd recommend looking as far as northern NJ, also out to Atlantic City.

Love the idea... btw... a car that fits your bill.... 70s and 80s Corollas... rwd and $1500 should get a car that can make your journey

Helga's younger sister: http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/1816248107.html

Saab 900S: http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/1789491372.html

'85 Cressida, fits the project car bill. Would be great with a junkyard 7M-GTE and manual swap. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/ctd/1812887214.html

Renault Alliance (if you can make it back alive): http://southjersey.craigslist.org/cto/1774293147.html

Alfa 164: http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/1755130387.html

Plenty of good choices here. Renault would make a good story, Cressida would be the most fun as a project.

You need the Alfa. There was one at the Summit Point Lemons race (at least I'm pretty sure it was the same model) and it sounded magnificent. Best soundtrack for a road trip.

Both cars are purchased thanks to eBay and Craigslist. We leave a week from today. Looks like we will be staying the first night in Philly at a GRMer's home to prep the cars for the journey!
