I'm leaving Friday to tow my RX7 up to a Drift Jam event at Toronto Motorsports Park in Cayuga. My route takes my up I79 through Erie, PA, and then up to Buffalo where google maps suggests I cross the border at the Peace Bridge. My past experiences with this crossing were always congested with traffic, and border agents who seemed irritated that I was bringing a car on a trailer along with me. (Years ago I trailered the same car up to Shannonville Ontario to drive that road course.)

In contrast, when I went to Quebec last year I crossed in Vermont, and the border crossing was a two lane road with one agent in a booth. That crossing was painless and pleasant both into and out of Canada. Are there any smaller crossings near Buffalo that would be worth the detour? It's also annoying that much of my travel time is spent going around the lake, I assume there is no ferry across Erie from the US to Canada? That would be a lot of fun I think.

I've had consistently good experiences at the "thousand islands" crossing connecting Landsdowne to Alexandria Bay.

Water crossings tend to be a little more congested because they're a little harder to build so there are fewer of them :) I know the Vermont crossings, they are very low key. Those great lakes are your problem, you have to get around them :)

There's another bridge a little further north on i90. Maybe look to see if it's plausible? Otherwise you're going way out of your way.

Don't forget the ArriveCan app, it's mandatory to fill it in within 36 hours prior to your entrance to Canada.

They're all water crossings from where you are coming from unless you want to drive way out of your way. The Peace Bridge gets you into Canada the soonest so that sounds good smiley. I often come home (to Canada) over the Rainbow bridge as you get a nice view of the falls and there's no truck traffic with that one, it will be a bit tighter with your trailer though but not bad. Lewiston is fine as well and that is where I typically cross into the US, it is a larger crossing like the Peace Bridge. With both the Rainbow and Lewiston you'll likely hit more tolls on the New York side (Grand Island) to get to them but it's not much. The tolls for crossing all of the Bridges are the same though and you only pay going one way so there is no savings there.

Like Honsch said, don't forget to download the AriveCan App and fill it out before arriving at your chosen border crossing. It is simple and painless to do, it will not be simple or painless if you do not do it though!

Good luck at TMP! I was there a week ago for some open lapping on Friday evening.

Its been a few years, but I've made the crossing in Buffalo to get to TMP multiple times with a truck and trailer.  We never had any issues getting into Canada, they didn't even bother looking inside the closed trailer when it was in tow.  The United States wanted to make sure we didn't sell any thing on the way back and looked around, but again it was an easy trip.  Caveat, this was all pre-covid travel.

The sad part?  I lived in Erie and it was only 30 miles across the lake but I spent my morning driving 2.5 hours around the nice lake to go play at the race track.

You have a couple of options in that area.

Peace Bridge - Buffalo
Rainbow Bridge - Niagara Falls
Queenston-Lewiston Bridge - Lewiston

Here's a link of wait times:

Wait times can vary. Some people swear by their favorite bridge, but I've found it's a crapshoot on any given day.

Oh good catch I was unaware of this.

Also ensure you have the correct documentation for re-entry on your return.

I commuted between New York and Ontario (Pearson Airport for awhile, then driving to Windsor) twice a week for roughly 5 years.  In general, I had best luck with the Lewiston-Queenston bridge (name order may change depending on what side of border you're on smiley).  Traffic moved relatively well, Customs agents were reasonable, and it was largely a non-event crossing over.  Granted, this was pre-COVID, so your mileage may vary.  Definitely check the bridge wait time link as you get within distance of the decision point (Peace/Rainbow/L-Q) to figure out the quickest option, but unless L-Q has a significantly extended wait time, that's my go-to bridge.

The little guy (Rainbow Bridge) was always fastest for me.

I'll be heading the opposite way from you Friday morning on my way to Watkins Glen, if you see a red E28 with tires strapped to the roof going down the QEW flash your lights or honk your horn!
