I tow a sunfish with my Acura TL all the time. just make sure it is balanced well. cars don't like too little/too much tongue weight.

I use a HF 4x8 trailer as a pickup substitute too. Usually behind our '11 Outback, but it spent plenty of time behind my old Legacy GT. I have the hitch in the garage to put on my Accord, just haven't gotten around to installing it. Trailer is amazingly useful. As others have said, don't overload it and you'll be fine. I did carry a yard of dirt in mine once--though it was behind my Suburban. Roughly a ton in a trailer rated for 1195 is not a good idea... Suburban was fine with it of course, but the trailer was low enough to rub the tires on the fenders. Won't do that again regardless of what I'm pulling it with.

Where does one find these ratings? My owners manual says not a thing about towing capacity. Likely because it's a VW, there IS extensive information about the correct way to tow it
I used to tow a Formula Vee on a trailer with one of these; imagine a 2WD pickup with a low cap. Air shocks in back helped a lot. Do the usual radiator & tranny flush and you're good for a bazillion miles of happy towing.
STP, Bardahl, NOS etc. stickers help a lot.

Search for a UK owners manual for your car (the Jetta is a Bora in Europe). Those will have tow ratings for with and without trailer brakes. I forget exactly what the unbraked rating is, but I remember the brakes rating for a Mk IV is 1500Kg.
That said, Chris's comments about liability bears repeating.
You will be fine with your trailer. I used to flat tow this car all over the MD, NoVA, and South central PA area with a V4 SAAB 96.

Nice Chapeau Hal, Sir Stirling would approve...

Rules and such were quite different back in 1968.
