A few weeks ago my beater Dodge Dakota finally got to me. I started idly looking at Toyota Tacomas again. This time a clean 2001 SR5/Prerunner V6 auto (in silver w/ a fiberglass bed cover) followed me home a few days later. It's nice, albeit tall. It'll hold a 40cc RC plane or a 400cc Supermoto. With a suitable rack thing it'll move a 22' single scull. But that's not the point...

eBay disclosed that TRD sells a tidy supercharger kit for these, and after just a week I'm hella-impressed with this engine in it normally aspirated form. It doesn't look too big. How about a sort of "Brunton Super Stalker but Japanese" thing? your basic locost with the 3.4 SC V6/Miata rear/rack/spindles...

I'm so close to ready to start on the frame for one, and have just sort of presumed that I'd use a Hayabusa engine, but remembering how badass my Jackson supercharged ep3 Civic hatch was gives me pause...

I dunno anything about the motor, but a SC V6 LoCost? Yes please! Sounds cool.

Look at URD for power adders for that supercharger.

A TRD SC V6 MR2 (holy crap, that's a lot of jargon!) putting out 400+hp handedly won Sport Compacts Ultimate Street Car Challenge 5 or so years ago.

Yeah, that was a 1mzfe, not even as strong as a 5vzfe either.

The 5vzfe is a ridiculous piece of over-engineering.

I say just twin turbo it.

I just looked up the Wikipedia entry on that engine. - Sounds tasty! Not up to the output figures of later VVT motors, but easier to manage due to the simplicity. It is tall though, and hood bulges can be ugly. Any idea how heavy it is?

Heavy. It's a cast iron indestructible monster.

It'd be perfect for a Drag-only locost, a sandrail locost, or making a rear engined locost with a weight distribution that would make even Porsche go .

700+whp on stock block is not unheard of with this motor. It's a 2jz for people who don't like inlines.

It's a shame that more VQ35s aren't set up for RWD, as they seem like the perfect V6 for a Locost. And honestly, at 275 HP, there aren't many of us who could manage power in excess of that in a 1400 pound car.

See.... but that's not the point. I'd be the moron to look at it and go "hrmmm..... a turbo would be AWESOME!"

If you want to see what turns me on.... go to youtube, and search for "caterham 3sgte." You'll see two videos, one keeping an eye on his guages, and one on a pod on the passenger side seat i think. It's epically scary, stupid, and AMAZING.

Well at least you have the experience to understand what a monster such a vehicle would be. There's a whole contingent of folks out there who love to bench race about 400 HP locosts, although a 150 hp one would be fast enough to make them piss themselves.

^ Yeah.... I've come to recognize the fact through trial and error that there IS such a thing as too much power. (I've had a couple REALLY scary CRXs.)

Will it stop me from doing something like that again? Nope. I'm in the middle of building a 2100-2300lb 92 Celica that end target goal is 500whp. I'm building it for me. Just to say i can, did, and will. But i suspect that a 500whp celica with a much longer wheel base will be a bit less scary than a 300whp 1700lb crx with mostly stock suspension and no LSD.

If i want something sane to throw around, i've got the EGT.

I'm not a great driver, so i like to exploit my one skill, which is taking something cheap and econoboxy, and making it scary.
