They announced the GR86 cup for Japan back in February, so I'm less likely to believe it's joke.
Yeah, In Japan you can get the BRZ Cup Car Basic with a roll cage pre-installed from the factory, along with eye bolts for six-point belts and an oil cooler.

Like this idea. Too bad there aren't any available for purchase. I am having the same experience with the new Z car. Dealers either don't know what is going on with it or talking about a $5K-$6K over sticker starting price, and will go up from there if demand is high. Buying a car these days is an exercise in futility.

I guess it is dependent on the dealer...I received mine in January after starting my conversation in September. The price was fair although supply and demand is a reality. I knew the exact sku I wanted and my dealer worked the Toyota allocation scheme to get it. It certainly does seem that Toyota underestimated the initial demand...being in the design/manufacturing world myself, I can relate to that struggle.
I love watching these cars race on YouTube in Austrailia.
It feels like Toyota is planning on setting itself up as the enthusiasts one stop shopping for fun cars and commitment to performance and competition. As many, especially Ford, are stepping away from sporty cars and fun to drive, Toyota are diving head long in to serve the enthusiasts.
Considering my time and Ford, and my terrible prior experience with Toyota 'quality', I'm surprised how happy I am to say this.
