Toyota had a big recall on the motorized seat belt control modules in the early '90's, this involved late '80's cars. It seems that the control unit was mounted under the center console in such a way that if a clumsy oaf spilled a Coke or similar it would run down into the control unit and let the smoke out.
One of the Japanese bigwigs who ran Toyota at the time made the mistake of saying that according to their records this ony occurred with US market vehicles, other markets which used the same system just didn't see the condition, therefore Americans were pigs when it came to the inside of their cars. He was right, of course and that's why he nearly had to commit hari kiri.
