SWMBO and I are planning to get a camper when I get close to retirement. Which is only about 6-7 years away. She only knows about trailers as that's what she's been around, my parents 5th wheel back when dad was alive. I grew up dad had motorhomes. I'm thinking this route and get a trailer to tow a car, either my classic or the Miata or maybe something else small. TBD. Not really looking seriously right now but window shop sometimes. Been noticing some used ones that have the Ford Triton V10 motor. One in a 30' class A and one in a 20' class C. I liked the size of the class C because I would have to drive it, didn't care much for the floor plan though. And it was older than I would like but price was good.

How are these for hauling the weight of the RV and towing a trailer? Don't expect fast or economical, just that it will do it without strain and maintain speed. I know optimum would be diesel and may go that route when the time comes but keeping all options open and trying to learn the options.

A friend had two V10 Fords, I think probably very close to the two you mentioned.  He towed a CRV with the longer one, and never complained at all.  He claimed high single digit gas mileage.

Edit: flat tow.

My parents are snowbirds from Ohio to FL. They have a V10 F250, with tow package (and the heavy duty trans). Its a 2004, I believe.

It only had about a 25ish gallon fuel tank, so they got an aux tank, an extra 55 gallons IIRC. They towed a 27’ camper for a few years then moved up to a 33' 5th wheel camper.

It pulled both like a champ, but it definitely is thirsty.

Be sure to have plenty of money set aside for a tune up when the time comes, 10 coils and plugs is not a cheap affair. Good luck!

I think that they blow out the spark plugs like the 5.4. While it's theoretically possible to fix with a helicoil or timesert kit, that may become a factor in ownership.

I have a 2006 F350 with the V10. That generation doesn't blow plugs but they can be a pig to change. The engine does great at hauling horses and cars but can't pass a gas pump. As mentioned expect high single digits for mileage.

3 valve v10's don't have the plug issues.  They do haul great, my 2010 f350 SRW with 4:10s is around 9mpg at 12500 trailers but can be as good as 11.5 if I keep the speed down to dam i feel slow....
