X1/9

  • It's a reliable daily driver.
  • Mid engine Goodness
  • Look better (in my opinion)
  • Parts are more plentiful
  • It's Italian

What year? The 1500 5spd makes for a better daily driver, 1/3 of my commute is 75-80 mph, not where a 1300cc 4spd is it's best. My old FI 1500/5spd was better in that regard.

I had a TR. I LOVED it, but wouldnt recommend either unless they were truly rust free.

It would be a close competition to see which one rusts first, otherwise, none of the above.

For many folks, this boils down to which model year/engine-transmission. As was pointed out, the 1300 Fiat is no match for a TR7. However, the early 7s had pretty poor build quality (at least compared to the later ones), a 4 speed manual transmissions, and let's face it...if it isn't a TR7 CONVERTIBLE it's kind of ugly (And I'm a fan of Triumphs).

For someone like me, at 6 ft 4 and 220lbs...it has to be the TR7 because I once tried to get behind the wheel of a friends X1/9 and it just didn't fit me. If I could have removed the driver's seat, then I could probably have fit, but my legs just couldn't get under that steering wheel.

so... I have to choose between a Fiat... or anything with Lucas electricals....

I know this isn't a 3 way choice... but why not also look @ a 1st gen MR2?????

far better than both in power, handling, maintanence.... and it looks similar to both

I've had 5 X's so I have some input on them... One of my all time favorite cars!!! They're very nimble and great on gas!!! Parts are still plentyful and pretty inexpensive to maintain... The rust issues are a well known downfall as is the 5-speed transaxle. Properly maintained they are fantastic and that lil engine sings!

I'm really sick of hearing about build quality on a 30 year old car. Any build issues caused by striking workers and blokes with a few too many under their belt at quitting time have long since been addressed in a 30 year old car. What really matters is engineering quality, something you just can't fix on a Fiat. If you find a non rusted out TR7, buy it. They are great cars even when they aren't completely sorted. Once sorted and loved, they are fantastic. Not as fantastic as a TR8, but fantastic non the less. Ask anybody that owns one, and don't listen to judgements from people who have never even driven one. Their easy to work on, cheap, and parts are plentiful. I picked up a TR7 parts car last weekend for free. Doesn't get any cheaper than that.

Either depending what you want to accomplish.

And that comment about an MR2 handling better? Steve Hoeschler said his X cornered better than his MR2.

My choice; an X with a K24 Frank.

I love how people make excuses for poor british build quality and engineering. My mercedes is over 30 years old and the build quality is superb as is the engineering. There is a reason why there are no surviving autonomous car companies located in britain. Even the italians and french have surviving car companies which aren't owned by the chinese or germans.

What "engineering quality" on a Fiat is is so bad? Especially being compared to a TR7?
