Both of those look nice- the Ion Redline would be a solid contender, but they're both a bit far away (especially the Ion, which is like 3 1/2 hours away).

So, thinking about it and from people's input, at the moment the Cobalt SS is sitting at the top of my choices and I'm going to message the seller about it and see what else I can find out about it.
Another option that I just noticed was this: 2001 Focus ZX3. It's on the cheaper end (especially if I can get it down a bit more), but ironically like the Cobalt has idle issues- though I expect they'll be easier to resolve on the Focus since the Cobalt has performance mods that will make things more complicated. Nice thing though about stickshift cars though- that's fairly easy to deal with when driving once you're used to it...
There's also this one that looks interesting (but could be a nightmare, since with a starter out it wouldn't be possible to evaluate it running...), but for some reason CL craps out trying to give me the contact number.... 2004 Focus
Might also want to keep an eye out for an Infiniti G20. Some of those are manual.

#1 It's a manual. You don't need a starter, just a push.
#2 Assuming that the starter from an '05 automatic will interchange, I can make you one hell of a deal! I've got one literally sitting on the shelf

Doh! I wasn't thinking about that- thanks! It's obviously been WAY too long since I've driven a manual that I forgot about that. Just checked, and it appears not only did 2005 mark a changeover between starters, the manual and auto look to use different ones too. Of course, they're only about $60, so if that's the only thing it would need I'd not complain.

KYAllroad also pointed me to classicjacket's 318ti over in the For Sale forum- it's an interesting option, though it would obviously involve a fly-and-drive, something of which I imagine would be an even more interesting addendum to convincing her that I should get another car at all (though she's at least not wholly unfamiliar with the concept, given it's how Antihero picked up the Rampage last summer...)
At this price point the Koreans are just not there for the fun to drive factor compared to the Cobaltss/Focus/Integra.

While I would love for you to buy my car, I would recommend replacing the fan assembly before doing a fly/drive with any real sort of distance to it. It's a comfortable enough car, but that 6 hour drive is no small feat, and probably equals how much i've driven the car in the last ~2 years.
4th, 5th, and 6th gen Accord manuals have a decently large aftermarket, are cheap, share parts with lots of other Hondas (i.e. 1G NSX brakes bolt right in), and are pretty fun.
EP3 Civic Si (2001-2005) can be had for cheap and ticks a lot of your boxes. People hated them because of the Mac front strut setup and the 160hp K20 but again theres a huge aftermarket and they sold the same platform in European and Asian markets.
RSX - a non Type-S model gets you the same 160hp K20 from the EP3 Si but they are generally cheaper and easier to find.
I know Cobalts will run and run and run but you also have to deal with that atrocious interior GM slapped in there.
I like Cobalts. I actually kinda really like Ions. Guilty pleasure?
Anyway, I'd actually shy away from Integras unless you plan to modify it. My mom briefly had one of the nicest LS/GS left in existence with a stick and while it was a really great car in many ways, it's not really fun unless you modify it. I considered my stock Neons more fun (and faster). So don't buy one unless you plan to mod it. I got a lot of satisfaction from how good of a design it was, the quality, styling, use of space etc etc, but...All the stock fun factor lived in the higher trim levels which you cant get for 2k. In fact, you cant really get any kind of good integra for 2k, but you might get lucky. There's at least one person on this forum who scooped up a good GSR for way less than it was worth semi-recently.

Duly noted- thanks! I wonder if the fan assembly for the '95 318 in the junkyard nearby would work in it... I imagine that the TSA would have an interesting time with that as checked luggage!

I'll add further here - I know that the temp sensor to kick the fan on has a wire pulled out of the pigtail. I "hard wired" a switch in to the fan Low speed relay, and still had no dice turning fan on. Replaced the (failed) resistor on the fan, same result - could be a bad relay, could be the actual fan assembly, could be something else entirely. If I could pinpoint or had spent more time messing with it I would probably still be driving it.

Amazon would deliver it to CJs location. at worst you hard wire it to the battery till it gets home.
Our Heap 318 has seen much harder use than an easy interstate cruise in 3 track days of redline flogging. Tough little car that feels amazingly good compared with most econoboxes.

It's crazy that for how much people hated EP3s, their price is holding steady compared to the much more capable 2006-2011 Civic Si which is currently tanking in price if you can even find one.
I will also vote for the 318ti. I love mine.

I've been telling my sons friends to look for 7th Gen Accords in 2.4 manual. Plenty of aftermarket support, plentiful and cheap. Can certainly made to be fun.
Pretty much the definition of a beater, and would have to work out a fix for the starter problem (race starter switch)- but also cheap and SHO... 1993 Taurus SHO
Heard back from the guy with the Cobalt SS- sounds like it has a harder time idling than expected as he didn't think it would be wise to drive it the half hour or so home from where he is. May still try and go and look it over, but that makes it a bit less appealing as it sounds like it couldn't be driven normally until that was fixed, and tracking down what's causing the idle wouldn't likely be a simple, definitive task like replacing a starter (or wiring up a starter switch).
Haven't gotten a response to my inquiry about the Focus with the starter problem- that may still be one of the better options if they actually respond.
