I like the B58 better having driven both at the M performance center in Palm Desert but that might just be me. I liked the M2 a lot more than the M3/M4

I think a basic 230 is worth checking out to get into something lighter and cheaper... Still a pretty porky modern BMW though and I'd just get a used Cayman S instead. Or even 997 911 C2S. I agree getting a 240 to track seems silly, I don't know if the M2 is a good deal or the 240 is overpriced.
Oh wait, BMW, both overpriced. :D

I haven't driven the M2 but drove a M235i a few times and own an F80 M3. What did you prefer about the M2? I'm just curious, I needed a bigger car and four doors so the M2 wasn't really an option.
Snrub said:Two different ideas that haven't been brought up yet: Audi RS3 and Honda Civic Type R.
Audi RS3 is something I've considered as well.
Type R? No interest in Fail Wheel drive cars. :)
OP are you alergic to Porsche? Sounds like right up your alley. Cayman is at the top of my list for an upgrade from my FRS.
Sad to hear the m235i doesn't have an LSD! What is wrong with BMW lately? Even our Frisbees have an LSD, and they cost <30k new. I think the only sports car I'd consider without an LSD is a Lotus (or perhaps a Miata, but that's just because they are cheap as E36 M3).
No, but a 981 S w/PDK, Sport Chrono+ and low miles are basically non-existent in my area and still north of what I'm ready to spend in the 4-8 weeks.
If I wait and save it up, it becomes a tie between it and an M2.
987s are getting into the low 20s and high 19s and still have the hydraulic steering /shrug
Yea, more worries about reliability, but that gets pretty close to disposable car price.
I’ve found with the local Camaro club guys I take to the autocross, most that have an issue with visibility just have the seat in the wrong position, and don’t know how to set their mirrors. When I correct that for them, it’s amazing how much better their driving gets too. My ‘16 1LT is so much easier to see out of than the Miata I had with either the soft top up, or the hardtop on. And if I was the first car in line at a stop light in the Miata, I practically had to put my right ear on the shifter to see it change.
I’ve had some seat time in the new ss and man it’s a hell of a car. It didn’t take me long to get used to the visibility or lack of, but I’ve had quite a few cars that didn’t have the best visibility and it just haven’t been a big deal to me. You get used to it.

I hate to be snarky, but I put 981 in my post for a reason, I'm not interested in 987s.........period.

Yes, my years of track experience in Miata's and sportbikes...............what are these mirrors you speak of? Are they on modern cars?

Oh it's an insane car, it's the track car deal of the last few decades. But for such a huge car, the interior and trunk (and trunk opening) is literally smaller than my BRZ. The interior makes me feel claustrophobic like driving my buddies WRL Miata (nets, Halo, HANS, etc)
I fit amazingly in the SS with Recaro's and everything, just to me, it doesn't work as a dual-duty car.
But got dang, is the SS 1LE just an amazing car. I just think I wouldn't happy with it for DD duties, if I'm only going to do a few HPDE's per year.

Ha! I felt similar but was looking at 987.2 cars with all the updates s and no IMS motor. They're thin on the ground though.
Ok.........saw somewhere(thread here) else life has taken you down a different path and your vehicle for the time being is???????????

At the time being there isn't really anything that's getting my jollies excited enough to go sign a big note. I've got plenty of stuff to do as far as yard and tree work at the new house I bought a few months ago, so I'm going to focus on that for a few months and revisit this summer.
Plus, it's starting to seem a bit silly to go buy a $40-50k car that will literally be driven 150-200 miles per month. The BRZ is on only its 4th tank since the end of September/beginning of October. And that includes a 220 mile trip to see family on Christmas Eve.
Congrats on the new house/yard/treework......hmmm I see a PU in your future...........here it is a F150 Raptor tricked out by Hennessy to the tune of 750hp!!!!!
Thanks! But nah, the tree work that needs to be done is all WAY up high. I'm not about to start climbing 15-30ft up in the air to remove dead limbs and thin them out so the grass will grow again!
Thankfully the inside of the house is LITERALLY, all new. Smoke damage total loss, so it's been completely renovated.
I just need to buy some yard tools, and garage organization stuff for the auto tools, and not really much else to do. Get a proper desk and chair for the home office, little stuff like that.

Sincerely interested in why you weren't considering the 987. I loved the 981 I drove and was hoping that as the 987 enters my price range it would be a suitable substitute? No? Or only bc of the lack of PDK?

I should have driven the STi first.......................the Camaro is just completely insane, bonkers fast... I think it really may be too much for HPDE for me. Call me an intermediate/advanced driver, the car is just, my mind is still warped a bit.
Jaynen said:I hear you on the car almost being too capable to be comfortable with in HPDE. I saw that first hand with all these guys in the novice group running Corvette C7s. Insanely fast but then the guy doesn't know the line, or where to safely point by etc.
Not to hijack the thread, but this is a really important point. These days, showroom-stock sports cars and muscle cars are as fast as hell. New V8 Camaros and Mustangs run 12s in the quarter mile right out of the box. Corvettes and Porsches now run 0-60 in less than 4 seconds. These cars have long been HPDE staples. How fast is too fast for DE?
It's a good question. In reality, you don't HAVE to press the loud pedal all the way to the floor..........but try resisting!
If you buy an '18 Mustang GT with the 10spd auto, you have a sub 4 sec 0-60 and 11sec 1/4 mile car as well.

Lack of PDK, and the styling doesn't arrest me like it does on the 987.
If I'm going to be dropping big coin on something, I want it to make me turn around and take another look as I get out to go in the store, or close the garage.
Writing this while only on page two, so maybe covered already...
If you are trying to decide what car to buy, think about 30 years from now when you are telling the grandkids about what you drove back in the day. The Camaro will still be relatable to their generation, the Subaru will get a blank stare.
Our future self most often regrets the stupid stuff we did NOT do rather than the sensible stuff we did.
