Interestingly, there were more 1990 Miatas per capita sold in Canada than in the US. This is a completely irrelevant fact.
I'm voting with the "help him get a beater" crowd. That way he has a 2nd car to drive when he decides to V8 the Miata :)
My Miata has been through 15 Michigan winters and I've patched rust holes two or three times, all in the usual spots. It's a good learning experience. I learned to weld and paint. The car still looks good from 10 feet and it's a hoot to drive on snow. Get some snow tires and go have some fun. Maybe you should buy the kid some tires and he'll "owe" you some driving time in return.
