Went to Harbor Freight this weekend, picked up one of their 6.5 horse engines on sale, and got my boy's yard kart running again. Not a bad way to spend a holiday weekend. More power than the old 5-horse it had, too.
Total cylinder count now stands at 15 (4+4+5+1+1)
I still need to sort out the linkage. I suspect it's only opening up to about 3/4 throttle, so the real scaring of the mother may still be yet to come.
does it sound any meatier? I grew up in a small seaside resort community, so I never had a go-cart. They were totally illegal
Nah, it actually sounds pretty tame. Probably moreso than a lawnmower, since it's a new muffler and not going full-blast all the time. We were a little worried about the neighbors having a conniption, but so far we've had nothing but smiles and waves.

My cylinder count is down to 10, and 6 of them are for sale. :(
What kind of engine does HF sell? Is it a far east clone of a Briggs and Stratton or something similar?

Yup, pretty sure it's a chinese clone of a B&S, or something like that. They also had some larger ones... 11hp and 15, as i recall.
And the 11 wouldn't fit the kart. I checked.
Ive seen Subaru engines at my local harbor freight.

I got one of those cheap cheap chinese imitation honda 13 hp engines to upgrade from the briggs 5horse mill that came with the 300 buck yard kart I bought. It goes juuuust fine, and still works, 3 years later... this is better than I was expecting.
I only have 12 cylinders at home.. all my lawn equipment is electric
Jay, the 13 would fit your Kart? I'm jealous.
Do the cylinders have to be in running vehicles to count? I have 16 (4 x 4), but I have more engines...

It fit that kart after we FORCED it to. 'Tweren't nothin' some channel and a wirefeed couldn't fix. The spendy part was the snowmobile-style variable final drive. This kart wishes it had suspension... hmm, lemme do a cylinder count. geez, 57...
