Porsche and Hilite patent a variable compression system, theoretically to work in conjunction with direct injection turbo applications to increase efficiency and decrease turbo lag.
A huge question mark still hangs over whether the resulting engine will be cheap
Really. New technology from PORSCHE cheap? Did pigs fly today or something?
Saab did variable compression a little bit ago. Iirc the head was hinged on one side to the block and hydraulics moved it up and down.

i've had cars with variable compression before, it just depends on which cylinder you put the compression tester
My variable compression device is called a "turbo."

Hm. I can't think of any way that rod design could possibly go horribly wrong. :)
Still, cool tech.
Really cool idea. As the article stated, Porsche is on it just from a consulting aspect. Anyone could use it. I think that 20 years ago, it'd be a pipe dream, but with the incredibly low tolerances of modern engine building, this could be viable.
I guess I'm just a sucker of any new automotive technology that doesn't include batteries or cars that drive themselves.....

Interesting. I do wonder how it would hold up as the bearings wear though.

imagine replacing that gasket

Interesting. I would've guess a normal piston and the trickery in the head, not a fancy rod.
I'd rather get the variable compression with adjustable intake cam timing. Which is already here. And doesn't berk up the combustion chamber.
Combined with Direct Injection, and the Cargine FreeValve system you could get a 90mpg 1.8L with 160hp still. It would be a bitch to service though.

Aw man, the engineers on Speedtalk had a field day with that nonsense...

Holy oil pan full of tiny parts. Agreed.

That makes much better sense than that abortion of a rod posted above.
i'd hate to see the effect extended length oil services have on a system like this

Porsche is going mainstream. They even make a hybrid now.
