Not sure if this would be the proper forum to post this...but I am trying to look into how to get involved with volunteer work for an amateur or semi-pro team. I am a college student at UT of San Antonio and do not have a lot of money to travel and a very limited schedule, so ideally I would like to be able to volunteer locally. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Rally guys are always looking for crew. Start there. Make connections and move on.

If you go rally, HAM radio is a huge plus. Rallycross is more like autocross. You'll be a great corner worker.

Hey! My wife and I both attended UT at San Antonio!

I recommend you look into UTSA's Formula SAE club (google search should provide their location on campus). It is an awesome opportunity. They've got a car they're working on/ competing with. You can see their old competition car in the old engineering building (not the new one with Einstein bagel). I think it's on the second floor near the engineering registration office.

If you're interested in autocross, look up the folks at SASCA (www.sasportscar.com) They're great people and have a some students who attend their events. There's another group called "Spokes" who run out at San Antonio raceway, but I've never attended their events.

I'm 16 so I'm in the same scenario. Based upon what I've found, I'd start as a corner worker for auto cross/rallycross/ice cross or a flagger at a race. Obviously, the FSAE (and or Baja) teams at your school would also be a great start.

I can agree with this. Get your foot in there and when you feel comfortable, you can step up to whatever fits you.

Do you think that auto crossing is important if I major in Automotive engineering in college? Are the driving skills and car setup also important?
