Anyone know how much room under the hood of a 1988 740?

Width between the strut towers. Distance from the firewall to the radiator. Top of the cross member to the top of the struts.

Any info would be appreciated.

I don't currently have any to measure but if noone else has the info I could measure one of the ones my friend has in a couple days.

I think it is known that the Ford 4.6L is too big for Volvo but Ford 5.0L is the answer.

The last time I saw my 740 he was behind the wheel giving it a new home. There's a lot of room in there.

Is the 740 similar in size to a 240. I came up with these on another forum.

240 engine bay

850 firewall to radiator support panel, then about 250 forward of that to the grill

770 between top of the strut towers

700 between chassis rails

600 cross member to top of strut towers

That give me almost 6" in width. Very little in height and 6 in length. I know the transmission tunnel would need some work.

The 740 should be similar but with less height.

Some norwegian put in a dohc 4.6 in a 240 and iirc didnt have to cut the towers.

Gotta ask, whats your plan?

Edit: posted your question on a volvo site, ill let you know with answers in a hour when im off work if someone doesnt beat me too it

In reply to chiodos:

The thought is all usable parts out of this:

Into this:

Engine, transmission, rear axle and so forth. Should be a fun sleeper for less than Challenge money.

Well, lookie what I found.

DOHC 4.6 into a 240.

And the DOHC is wider than the SOHC.

The opening is plenty big. You might run into issues with brake booster interference, and that sort of stuff.

Thats the one i was talking about earlier! And thats where i asked your question but unfortunately haven't gotten a response, but it seems you have your answer

And in reply to what streetwise said about the brake booster, the dohc 740s have a slim brake booster so if you do have a problem there, theres a junkyard bolt in available solution.

In reply to chiodos:

The one above used the hydro-boost off of the Mustang and did away with the vacuum booster.

Yeah but its a 240 and iirc the boosters dont cross over. That said it looks like the dohc takes up too much space even for the slim one. Dunno about the sohc but im still waiting for dimensions on that site...they arent as awesome as this one
