I put a reman steering rack in my 850 at around 210K miles, it was probably leaking a bit for 5-10K miles before it was replaced. Pump and hoses are original, and still in good working order.

There's nothing on a P80 car that the average GRMer should be scared of maintenance wise. PCV as mentioned earlier is a chore, but only because the intake manifold has to come off to get to the oil trap. I've completely replaced the PCV system on mine once in the ~10 years I've owned it, and just a couple months ago I did some cleaning and made some modifications to it while I had the intake manifold off for other reasons.

I really want to like these, but am still soured by the low pressure turbo wagon we had that would randomly loose spark and strand us places.

How hard was it to change the rack? I've heard that you need to raise the engine. Is that true?

You have a lift right? If not it could be done on Jack stands. Loosen front subframe bolts, support subframe, remove rear subframe bolts, lower rear of subframe, R&R steering rack. I still worked at the dealer and had lift access at the time. Easier to get to the rear hydraulic (fluid filled) engine mount while you're at it.
