Definitely and interesting set up and design from back in the 70s. Anyone ever do something similar to this before?

I feel like there is something about that that should be extremely dangerous, but I'm not sure what. I mean, other than your trailer apparently being attached to your car via a ball that is essentially a single crossbar attached to the roof gutters. Other than that, I guess it's an early fifth-wheel setup.

That video has been floating around for years.  I agree it's hard to say why it never caught on. Possibly because Beetles were slow enough before adding a trailer.  Probably due to the weight capacity of the roof structure that would limit the tongue weight and thus the trailer weight.

This video gets passed around a lot but it seems there are no survivors, so they must not have sold many of them.

Yeah the stock beetles were like up to 20 seconds to 60 with the 1500 engine. So it probably takes a day to get up to speed towing this .

Shadow Trailer

The article mentions some of the troubles with it.  One thing I imagine is dealing with the different heights of vehicles.  With a standard fifth wheel, there is an adjustable leg built into the trailer, but I don't see one in the pics.

Love the idea, though.
