Got a VW question. I need new drive flanges for my 85 Golf but it appears the 90mm ones are not available anymore. To switch to the 100mm ones do I need anything besides the flanges and new axles?

Flanges, seals, axles, and maybe hubs, not sure about the last one though. I know the outers arent the same, but I dont know if they go into the same hubs.

Outers are 100mm also although I believe you can order 90-100 intermingled axles or just build your own.

Did you try buying used flanges? I have a couple trans sitting here...

I know if you put the 90mm outers on the axles for the 100mm inners they slide back and forth on the splines.

I have been looking for some used ones but haven't had any luck yet. I planned on changing the whole axle if I do this. I am hoping I don't need to change the hubs because I just put new ones on when I changed the wheel bearings.

Hubs are the same but the 100mm axles don't fit in some knuckles without grinding. I think this is just an A1-chassis issue, though.

get a set of flanges in a junkyard?

There's got to be countless old junk trans' from the '80's era piled in garages/barns across the country.

I probably have a few sets of 90mm flanges in my garage somewhere.

I guess my point being, try looking outside of new, they're not a normal wear item so any set should be fine.
