I just drove next to one of these on the road 15 minutes ago:

it had a small latch and padlock on the gas tank door. in the passenger seat was what appeared to be a large plastic container. maybe a fuel cell? biodiesel?

it's a really nice looking car. I'm guessing it was heading to wherever that carrier full of Polos I saw a few month ago went to.

VW has a test facility in Arizona, sounds like they've been adventuring on the roads.

If they have a test mule here that says something about us getting it. hmmmmm

Just 'cuz it's tested here, that doesn't necessarily mean it will be sold here. Europe has nothing like Death Valley AND the Rockies, at least not within a few hours of each other. I've heard and read many "stories"/reports of folks who have seen different French cars and MPVs being driven on the East Coast....when's the last time you saw a Renault or Citroen or Peugeot?

I must be smokin' some really good stuff or someone dosed me without my knowing because I saw it. first in front of me and then in the lane next to me after I sped up to see wtf it was.

initially I thought it was a Z3 coupe, the ass end looks kind of squashed and squat. I saw the "Scirocco" "2.0 TDI" badges on the back. it was left hand drive if that means anything to anyone.

it really is a sweet looking body style - aggressive hatchy hotness!

to ad to the trippy scenario was that I was homebound with an Isuzu motor strapped to a pallet in the rear of my Hyundai Excel hatchback. I think the motor more than doubled the weight of my car and I haven't figured how to get it out without getting a hernia...

Motor Trend is to automotive journalism, as People is to SERIOUS social journalism. And while there are folks who will think I'm wrong.........think about how relevant Motor Trends intials are: M/T.

I'd rather have this diesel Scirocco.

A diesel Scirocco would be fun. Gas to diesel swaps are illegal in california though. grr
