Was the W124 ever offered with a diesel in the US?
Yes 96 and 97 had the 603 turbo diesel. The one to have is the 96. The 97 has the dreaded trap oxidiser before the turbo.

That is the W210.
But yes, they were offered with diesels. I was unaware that they were ever offered with manual and diesel though.
And a quick way to see if it is a diesel is to check if it has these little vents on the side:
I'm about 99% sure that those were only on the diesel cars, but I'm not sure if all diesels had them.
I think they started out on the turbo diesels (my 250D didn't have the gills) but even the NA diesels I've seen over here seem to have them.
96 and 97 isn't a W124. Yes they offered the 124 with a diesel. I have one. What do you want to know about them?
Yes there are w124 diesels. It will be called a 300d "turbodiesel." You can also find the w124 estate in diesel variety, but the w124 diesel seems much rarer than the w123 diesels of which there are millions.
There is also a 190d but I don't know if it was a turbo model.
A good way to spot a diesel is the color of the car, for some reason diesel owners are drawn to the beige, caramel, pastel, etc, colors but this isn't a sure bet. You'll a also see them in charcoal grey and black.
