I'm thinking this is a good solution to get rid of a 3 row SUV, which I really don't need except the occasional "drop the kids off at a football game".

What wagons, less than 10 years old, have the old school rear-facing 3rd row?

Mercedes E class is the only one I can think of. The older Audi Allroads had it as an option...

I think the Taurus wagon may have gone through '05. Sedan till' 07

More than your 10 year limit, but the Buick Roadmaster Wagon had LT1 goodness in '94-'96 and that rear facing seat too. Buy a low mileage garage kept one, and you'll be good for many years to come.

I think your 10 year limit is getting close to when most car companies decided to stop putting kids in the crumple zone.

What about a used Ford Flex Ecoboost on H&R Lowering Springs (-1.2" front, -1.9" rear) and a Livernois Stage 1 Pack? Well over 400 ponies at the crank, wagon-like height and drive, and minivan-like hauling capacity.

Be warned that some kids get carsick riding in those rear facing seats...

I remember riding in the tailgunner seats in my Dad's 97 Taurus wagon when I was in middle school. Besides feeling slightly nauseous on longer rides, the seats were hella uncomfortable. The Taurus wagon's 3rd-row seats felt like sitting on a lightly padded slab of concrete.

Go big or don't bother..

The best ones were in the GM B bodies from the 60's sometime to the end of the 96 model year.. we had an ancient blue Impala wagon with the rear facing seat when i was a kid in the 70's.. that was also before seatbelts were used to restrain people in moving cars so changing seating positions while going down the highway was not only possible but encouraged as long as you didn't cause dad to drop his cigarette or spill his Windsor coke while he was driving..

That was supposed to be one turbo. I have NO IDEA how that happened haha.
I drove it to the airport this morning. The 50-90 mph time is staggering! Wow!
