If a 7 psi spring was installed in an external 44mm wastegate but the boost hose was disconnected so both top and bottom of the diaghphram were open to atmo, what psi do you think it would hold before exhaust gases push it open?

7psi of exhaust pressure will start to open it. Ya I know not what you want to hear  laugh

I assume you mean at what boost pressure will you see in the intake before it opens?  That is almost impossible to know as it is completely dependent on the back pressure of the exhaust.  Have a high flow exhaust and you will get quite a bit of boost. If the exhaust is restrictive it will open at low boost.

Im talking exhaust back pressure.

Surely the smaller diameter of the wastegate valve would need exposed to more pressure to open it by comparison to the size of the diaphragm?

On a 3 port boost solenoid setup both top and bottom of the diaphragm are exposed to equal pressures when the solenoid is at 100% cycle duty. This would behave like both sides being exposed to atmo.. No?

7-12 PSI of backpressure, depending on a few factors.
