The last couple of months I've had this whacky vibration in the Mustang from which I thought it was from the warped/hotspotted rotors. Well I replaced those and the vibration went away at the 50mph...happy right? Hit 60+ and it's still there. Roadforce balance the wheels at work Monday and take it out for a spin, still there, put it on the alignment rack to check all suspension components and just check the alignment and everything under the car looks and seems pristine. I'm really at a loss for what to do.

The steering wheel shakes like crazy right at 60 and above and I mainly just feel it in the steering wheel. I've checked everything, had someone else check everything in the steering system. Rack is fine, tie-rods, boots, p/s fluid, pump, etc. I'm just scratching my head, I can't find anything on All-data, called over to Ford and they said "check rotors," honestly just like WTF mate. Anyone have any advice?

I recently had a strange vibration in my Liberty, turns out it was a froze up U joint.

Bent wheel?

IIRC a semi common problem on mustangs is a weight coming off the driveshaft, but it sounds like yours is a front end problem.

check your struts out/check torque on fasteners and make sure the tops are good?

i'll check that next, maybe take it over to the Ford in our dealer group and see about the driveshaft issue. Co-worker says he feels it in the whole car, but I've been driving f-bodies since I was 16 so I'm used to a whole car vibrating lol, just not a steering wheel liek ths one is.

I'd have to do a bunch of hunting, but if I recall correctly there was a TSB about the driveshaft thing. Its been a few years since I read it and I am not sure if I am recalling correctly though.

Hope it helps!

PS, you didnt list checking the wheel bearings...

+1 on the driveshaft issue. Been there, done that.

I wanna say that it sounds like the driveshaft to me, too.

If the vibe can be felt in the seat, comes in at ~50 MPH and gets worse with speed but never goes away, I vote driveshaft. If it starts at ~50 then goes away at a higher speed I'd look into a bad tranny mount. Particularly if you can change the vibe by accel/decel without touching the brakes.

Couple more suggestions:

  • re-check front end parts, especially tie rods
  • sticking caliper? Easy to catch - check wheel temperatures side to side

Take driveshaft out, bring to driveline shop. They will check the u-joints and re-balance the thing. Best money I ever spent on my RX-7.
