I'm trying to remove the shock in the picture. There are supposed to be flats where a wrench goes to hold that shiny shaft still while I turn the but on top. There aren't, I can't make the shiny part stop spinning.
What am I missing? How stupid/dangerous would cutting or welding a way to stop it from spinning be?
Edit: before "but rev, there's a collar there" the collar spins freely of the shaft.
In reply to barefootskater :
Just spins, even with a piece of rubber in the teeth. .
I need to buy a nut splitter
Many times the top of the shaft is hex. Use one wrench to hold the hex and another to turn the nut.
Or use an impact.
Or a deepwell socket with a long extension is usually enough leverage to break the top of the shaft off below the nut.

Sawzall the top nut off
Dermal was taking too long, I was about to grab the death wheel but this sounds slightly simpler
I was doing a shock swap on one of my panthers, and encountered this on the last one, driver's side front.
All I had was hand tools, so an impact wasn't an option. Didn't have anything to cut it with either. I took it to a shop where they quoted me a big chunk of money.
Just then, the mechanic walked back out of the shop with about a 4-foot extension and a deep well socket and popped the end of it off. Took him no more than two seconds.

This is the answer if you have enough room to swing the extension back and forth.
